America has such a fucking weird pre-occupation with drugs; possibly more than Japan has a weird pre-occupation with sex. The idea seems to be that drug addicts are monsters who we should refuse to anything by decry instead of, you know, tragedies that we should try to help.
|
Old_Zircon - 2014-02-23 I don't know, I think either stance is reductive and objectifying. They aren't "monsters or "tragedies," they're people. Help should be available but not imposed.
But of course, that way lies things like the elimination of vice laws and that's a little too much freedom for this country.

Hooker - 2014-02-23 Well, I didn't mean to say that drug addicts should be interned in rehab clinics or anything. I think it's a hard sell to say that a Kurt Cobain-type is not tragic, though.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2014-02-23 Mostly because between our broken healthcare system and rampant anti-intellectualism, the only course of action for addicts in most of the country is Alcoholics Anonymous and its various substance-specific offshoots because it's cheap, it's a way for the courts to push Jesus on people.

He ran away from Aberdeen because it was a shithole. Ever been to Aberdeen? It's a shithole.
Off the subject but I grew up on the same road as Cobain and unknowingly was stopped behind the ambulance that held his body in front of his home. I had no idea he even lived there and was in shock that I had been so close to the event. Also, Mary Kay LeTourneau was arrested half a block from my house while having sex with a kid!

Aelric - 2014-02-23 Aberdeen is one of the nastiest towns I've ever had the misfortune to visit. You literally get the "You ain't from 'round here, is you boy?"-vibe just popping into the gas station to get some smokes.
That said, I don't think it's bad that the town would want to put up some sort of acknowledgment somewhere, but that statue looks like utter shit. Probably got some Greener College freshmen to make it.

baleen - 2014-02-23 Perhaps worse is Hoquiam, its pleasant sister city.

cognitivedissonance - 2014-02-23 Well, the other option was serial killer Billy Gohl.
WIKI IT. YOU WON'T REGRET IT.

EvilHomer - 2014-02-24 (we pushed the MLK thing, and we got national news coverage and a visit from Jesse Jackson out of it, SO IT WAS A GOOD CALL.)

Aelric - 2014-02-24 This explains so much, EvilHomer

Xenocide - 2014-02-25 Evilhomer is working on a screenplay about his life growing up in Hitlerville.
|
baleen - 2014-02-25 the point is they are commemorating a person who hated them and who, as a community, they treated like shit.

For a second I thought this was my hometown of Aberdeen, Scotland. Wouldn't put it past them tbh.

M-DEEM - 2014-02-23
not exactly George Washington because Kurt Cobain never owned human beings

TeenerTot - 2014-02-24
The footage of the town and "festival" very much reminds me of Dean Martin's birthday in Steubenville.

Really pathetic. There wouldn't be any of this dumb shit if he hadn't smeared his brains on a wall.
