I've been here since the POE Red days. Seanbaby's site in its prime. Fat Chicks in Party Hats. Captain Obvious. Hilarious, legendary forum moments. Epic, hilarious people. "Christmas Cat." Terrible people evading bans and providing more hilarity. "Minutemen of Child Porn." I watched the faction split as it was happening after Chet announced his departure. Watched the angry refugees put up Bo News. Watched Red die. Watched TV spring up and then News die. Laughed at DemoniusX. Laughed at VenomFangX. Laughed at Corky's acting showcase. Stood in awe when he went to jail for stealing houses.
And I watched the userbase dwindle from dozens of names to the same small handful of people fighting with one another. Saw comments drop from dozens per video to three or four.
And I had a good time. And, with a heavy heart, I will say this: Even if TV lasts for another few years, even if the Big Five destroy themselves and free up all the Internet real estate they bought out, we are not getting Web 1.0 back. We are not getting that sense of comradery after finding ourselves on a new, untapped frontier. It's paved. It's done. It's over. We are dying or dead inside already. We shouldn't cry because it's gone, of course, but smile because it happened. But I will try not to cry because it's gone.
And this current generation will have no idea what it was like, or what they lost.
Tears in rain, indeed.
