The same (sound) argument can be applied to other countries but replace SUVs with cars and cars with bicycles.

SolRo - 2023-03-07

At some base level you will just need to design cities in mind with protecting pedestrians because there will always be some need for commercial transport vehicles in any developed city. You cannot transport all the food and materials a modern city uses in a day with cargo bicycles.

But commercial vehicles will typically have hire requirements for driver training and licensing rather than the American standard of your rich parents can buy you a 6,000 pound death machine at 16 years of age.

Crackersmack - 2023-03-07

This guy has a decent point but exaggerates a lot. I watched the whole thing and I'm not convinced the size difference between cars and trucks matters wrt much of anything except pedestrian injuries.

If you leave all the politics out of it and just consider a vehicle as a product, you get a whole hell of a lot for your money with a full size truck compared to almost any other passenger vehicle.

Ford selling almost a million F150s a year, Chevy selling 500k+ Silverados, etc really does create an economy of scale that the buyer benefits from. For $35k-ish you can get something big, fast, fairly luxurious, generally inexpensive to repair, and that really will run for hundreds of thousands of miles without major work (obviously w/ some exceptions) from any of the major manufacturers. For the same money you could buy a fwd or awd car that will probably be pretty good for 50k to 100k miles, and that you basically throw away at 150-200k miles maximum. It's not hard to see why people go for the truck.

SolRo - 2023-03-07

You are clueless about cars.

Everything you thought is wrong.

jfcaron_ca - 2023-03-07

The damage done by vehicles to the roadway surface has been found to scale like (vehicle weight)^5. That's right, to the FIFTH power. So a vehicle twice as heavy ends up costing society 32 times more in maintenance costs. The same type/class of vehicle, but made electric, weighs nearly 50% more because of the batteries. You don't notice when driving because the motors have a lot more torque. In a decade we'll notice cities *extra* can't afford to fix the roads if EVs become ubiquitous. Driving around in a city with an F-150 is just plain stupid.

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-08

Go drink motor oil, Cracker.

I know you're all like "Hey, this guy's being a jerk and telling me to do stuff I'm not gonna do".

No, really, actually do it. I will settle for you drinking a whole can of brake cleaner, but that's my final offer.

Crackersmack - 2023-03-08

I actually know a little bit about cars even though I'm not a level 10 jiffy lube tech or whatever. However I did not know that damage to roadways scales like that, which is surprising. I still think 'truck too big' is a dumb, losing argument to waste effort on if the actual goal is to progress away from cars in general.

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-08

You're never going to be a gearhead until you sit in your garage with the door closed, and watch your car idle for at least two hours, Cracker!

SolRo - 2023-03-08

‘Trucks last 300k miles or longer without needing repairs and cars fall apart after 50k miles’

That’s how we know you’re a blithering retard.

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-08

SolRo, take a page from my book- don't bother reading what he says, just use him as a punching bag until he leaves.

Crackersmack - 2023-03-08

Yes, full size trucks are more durable than passenger cars. They last longer and don't require the same frequency of maintenance.

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-08

See, look? It's still trying. It wants you to talk to it.

SolRo - 2023-03-08

I’m just amused this internet idiot is mechanic-splaining to me, a master mechanic with 7 years experience.

Crackersmack - 2023-03-08

I'm not mansplaining how to change brake pads on a Taurus, I'm making the easily defensible assertion that vehicles designed for fleets and industrial use tend to be more durable than vehicles designed for strictly passenger use, and that economies of scale are things that exist. We can compare resumes and dick sizes if that makes you feel better though.

SolRo - 2023-03-08

“Bro my assumptions are better than your actual hands-on experience. Trust me bro. Also I have a big dick. Trust me bro”

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-08

Again, I suggest brake cleaner

Crackersmack - 2023-03-09

lol bro the fact that you rip off soccer moms for car repairs that they don't actually need doesn't grant you some kind of unquestionable authority on automotive topics, if you are still turning wrenches for money in your 30s and 40s you're a fucking loser lol

SolRo - 2023-03-09

Oh looks like I hurt someone’s little feelings.

Feeling inferior and defensive?

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-09

See, he tried to be all smart, but that obviously wasn't gonna work, and now he's just lashing out in desperate hopes that someone will take the bait, and allow him to change the subjects.

Go on, Cracker! What will it be? Double down in your clearly lost attempt to be the smartest man in the room, or slink away, only to return in a week with hopes that we've forgotten?

Crackersmack - 2023-03-09

just make sure to upsell the cabin air filters to every customer because corporate says the per ticket average is down

SolRo - 2023-03-09

Oh the little baby is crying!

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-09

Oh shit, look out, guys! Now he's rich!

I'd say I'd pay you three dollars to let me put a cigarette out on you, but then I remembered I could just do it for free and there's no way you'd stop me.

teethsalad - 2023-03-09

lol at least mechanics are useful

all you do is make it possible for rich fucks to sail to st barts or wherever the fuck it is shitty floridians go

Crackersmack - 2023-03-09

lol I'm literally a tool and die maker and was a machinist/shop foreman in an elite race engine shop for 14 years before I got my BSME, you all are a trip

and the bizarre focus on boats being evil or whatever is adorable but seems forced

SolRo - 2023-03-09

Why don’t you tell us how much you make since you’re constantly trying to act like your job polishing the poles of rich sailors makes you so much better than everyone else here.

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-09

lol you're gonna die adrift in the ocean

Crackersmack - 2023-03-09

lol you all are the people that decided I'm rich or whatever, how much do you think a person with a bachelors degree and a bunch of experience makes designing fiberglass molds? it's not exactly the NFL even if I do get to borrow/test/work as a crew member on some pretty spectacular yachts

SolRo - 2023-03-09

And there it is. The simp cabin boy bends over for the chance to act like he’s rich by puttering around on someone else’s toy.

I’ve had the opportunity to work on literal multi million dollar concourse Italian exotic cars. Which I turned down because the pay wasn’t any better than fixing Volkswagens and I’m not going to simp like that just to play with some rich assholes toys for a little bit.

But you still won’t give a number despite acting like you’re better than others. Must be low. Your delicate ego can’t handle someone here out earning you.

teethsalad - 2023-03-09

god you're so insecure, smack

boat owner is shorthand for "rich asshole" in the flyover with the poors you simultaenously detest and claim to defend

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-09

It's almost as if he's either a super smarty rich boy or a salt of the earth man of the people, depending on which one he needs to be at that moment to make a bad faith argument in order to get attention.

Crackersmack - 2023-03-10

"I’ve had the opportunity to work on literal multi million dollar concourse Italian exotic cars. Which I turned down because the pay wasn’t any better than fixing Volkswagens"

Yeah this isn't true. Exotics definitely pay better than VWs. If you are a good mechanic you end up specialized in something, and eventually own your own business or work for a high end dealer. But lucky for you the world needs lots of tire changers too.

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-10

Cracker's life is so amazing, he has to hang around with people who hate him. And he puts up with it when we call him a fuckin' idiot right to his face!

You think he realizes that if he died tomorrow, we'd all forget about him in under a week?

SolRo - 2023-03-10

Lol boaty mcboattard still thinks he knows my industry.

My industry is full of dumb brand simps like you, so the high end dealers can just hire and abuse a bunch of fanboys while I get paid very well being a diagnostic technician.

And I’ve worked highline brands, I started with them.

If I want ulcers and panic attacks I’ll start my own shop. Or I’ll just apply with all the recruiters asking me to work at automotive R&D departments for 6 figures and plush benefits.

Crackersmack - 2023-03-10

lol my man no automaker is recruiting normie-ass mechanics for R&D departments, this does not happen

SolRo - 2023-03-10

That’s because I’m not normal, I’m better than you.

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-10

We're all better than you, Cracker. And we know what you really do for a living.

Now shut the fuck up and sort my glass or I'll throw you away.

cognitivedissonance - 2023-03-11

Dork.

ashtar. - 2023-03-11

I have honda accord with a bunch of miles on it that has been really reliable, and I also drive a chevy truck for work that is really reliable and a good vehicle. Why don't we talk about what cars we like for practical reasons?

SolRo - 2023-03-11

I like my old bmw 5 series wagon because it’s a sports car that can move a bunch of shit whenever I need to

duck&cover - 2023-03-07

Large and in charge. Can't see your shrimpy, little body over this hood. Watch out, I'm a motorist.

duck&cover - 2023-03-08

There's really no utility in making trucks taller and bigger, as I have read people saying who actually use them for work, not just as dick extensions.

Nominal - 2023-03-07

What the fuck 0:50? Did the SUV driver see all the crisscrossing traffic passing through the intersection the other way, and figure "That means GO!" ?

love - 2023-03-07

luxury SUV's and daddy-issue trucks: you cannot go wrong avoiding them on the streets and highways.

Jeriko-1 - 2023-03-08

There's also this idea that choosing one of these vehicles 'is the only logical choice'. More or less 'Big vehicles rule the road so I need a big vehicle to keep from being at the mercy of somebody else's big vehicle. I got a family to protect.' The basic NRA fallacy.

Crackersmack - 2023-03-08

Why can't we have kei cars/trucks in the US? Because of safety regulations that have saved probably thousands of lives. But wouldn't lives also be saved if we moved 25% of drivers into a kei car, directly via reduction in pedestrian injuries and indirectly through reduction in emissions? People really want small trucks and cars again but they just aren't available at a reasonable cost.

Crab Mentality - 2023-03-08

Why can't you take a hint, and fill all the holes in your head with epoxy?
