In Canada university professors used to have mandatory retirement (at 65 too I think), but there was a Human Rights Complaint that went to the supreme court that abolished the rule nation-wide. Now we've got 70-80 year old profs making 2x what a normal young new prof would make, but there are no spots for them, so we only hire superstar candidates. In the lingo of Canadian science funding, this is called "excellence".
