While it's a matter or public record that SpaceX uses a different engineering philosophy for Starship than their storied competitors do for comparable programs, it remains to be seen if this approach will ultimately result in a better deliverable to supplier or consumers.

Simillion - 2023-04-21

my experience in KSP dictates this will not be a very successful approach

What's up with the rocket needing to do a fliparooni to separate from the booster? Past systems would just let them fall. The fliparooni seems to create too many complications.

Starship/Super Heavy isn't using a traditional stage separator setup to save mass. Normal rockets have actuators that will push the two stages apart, since the upper stage engine is usually tucked into the inter-stage that is attached to the 1st stage, but the 2nd stage engine needs to be clear of the 1st during ignition. With Starship, the inter-stage is technically attached to the ship, so the ship doesn't need to be linearly pushed for the engine clearance. Because of this, SpaceX has decided to try just using the inertia that separation during a flip provides, much like how they deploy Starlink satellites.

I don't think it was supposed to do that.

betamaxed - 2023-04-21

Did they really have to make it look that much like a giant black dildo?

Musk got in trouble for saying he'd buy back all twitter stocks for $420 and he painted over the W on the SF Twitter HQ to make it look like T itter, so yes. He's the 2nd richest man on earth with the maturity of a middle schooler. He'll make the biggest dildos ever.

Binro the Heretic - 2023-04-21

Why are we still pretending that going into space will provide us with anything worthwhile?

The Mothership - 2023-04-22

Where else we gonna go, player?

Juice Eggs McKenna - 2023-04-22

Under the sea!!

The man has a dozen kids.

He wants to impregnate Mars.

That's who we're looking at here.

Nominal - 2023-04-22

He wants BBCs to do all the impregnating for him.

Binro the Heretic - 2023-04-23

@The Mothership

To colonize another planet, we would have to drain Earth of every resource it has to send a very few off with a fighting chance while everyone else gets left here to die a slow death.

Which group do you think you have a better chance of being in?

decoy - 2023-04-23

Starship and SpaceX funding are more about broadening the national security toolbox than Elon's pretend time horizons for Mars colonization. In earnest, that's centuries years off. It won't catch fire until we can A) transit back and forth in weeks and not months, and B) harvest most, if not all, of the required resources to sustain a colony's basic needs from the Marian environment itself.
