I can really understand how Jews in the 20's or 30's could make the reasonable conclusion that the multi-ethnic liberal democracies would not protect them. But, in the end, the options are either multi ethnic democracy or carpet bombing civilians and the survivors doing surgery with no electricity and no anesthesia.

White supremacists in America make a similar pitch. "We don't hate other races, we just want a homeland for just us so we can preserve our people and culture. Couldn't we have just a small area that's just for us?" Their case is obviously weaker for self-preservation, but this is ultimately bad for exactly the same reasons. Ethnic cleansing is a) evil and b) doesn't even work, it just creates big intractable problems.

I believe they were 10% of the whole region in 1890, I think you might be thinking of 1800. But in some areas (like Jerusalem) it was more like 50%. I'm completely sympathetic to the Palestinian people, but it can be extremely easy to oversimplify this enormously complex story. We are talking about a province of the Ottoman empire, an empire constructed in part through and collapsing into ethnic cleansing and ultimately genocide of non-Muslim populations. This was not the case in Palestine (historically a poor, relatively underpopulated region) but this is the larger context in which the great powers engaged with the idea of building of a Jewish homeland: a context of massive population shifts, resettlement, and of course genocides on a scale and of a type unprecedented in world history.
