A bit of backstory to ruin the mystery here:
Apparently this was an election year, and the orange jackets were one party's 'button'. The other party gave out blue berets. The network, being a backer of this party, issued the jackets to the news team. The anchors were actually backers of the blue beret party.
So the whole bit is actually a subtle political jab in a culture far removed from our own.
I still like to think of it in its pure E HEE HEE HEE sense though.
