This isn't a hack or anything. You hold... I think the left arrow on the player 2 controller, and Megaman can make crazy jumps and jump out of holes. Apparently if you time it right he's immortal when he jumps out of the pit? It's been 20 or so years since I did this.

When I did it , the life meter went away. You had to do the grab the wall trick and drop down the pit before the last boss, or so I remember.

Not quite.

The life bar seemed to go away randomly, but made you effectively invincible. While you couldn't use your arm cannon, special weapons could be used no problem.

I'm pretty sure that the controller 2 trick was a quick-'n'-dirty debug tool that the devs forgot to disable.

When I was a kid I spent many happy hours playing MM3 with my toe on the left arrow of controller 2.

I used to do that, only I would put a large plastic Godzilla on top of controller 2's left.
