Why are schools teaching kids anything about marriage?
dementomstie
that's an excellent point I hadn't thought of.

Rodents of Unusual Size
Maybe they are lying and it was just one school? Anyway, this is all speculative. California schools are so broke they can't afford sports or how to teach kids to add. They sure as hell won't be able to afford teaching them anything as complicated as law.

SolRo
schools teach kids to be respectful twords kids that have homosexual parents, you think the biggots would actually say that in the ad?

Syd Midnight
Because the school has not banned the book, it explicitly endorses all children doing everything in the book.

I'm more confused about how they plan to respect marriages by attacking marriages.

Goethe and ernie
I was already to go "pah" and "pishtosh" until I saw that homeboy attended Pepperdine University School of Law, which is so prestigious I have never even heard of it.
StanleyPain
I knew a girl in high school who never shut up about she was going to the illustrious "PEPPERDINE" after graduation. Turns out she couldn't get in.

nidan
Ken Starr ended up as dean of Pepperdine's School of Law awhile after the Clinton/Lewinsky hearings

phalsebob
That is the first thing I look for (as a liberal elitist) when these jackanapes start throwing their degrees around. Pepperdine is a Christian school... which sets warning bells off. They are accredited by the Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, which has a semi-functional website.
I was shocked to learn that the US only has regional accrediting organisations, because the US dept of education does not accredit... WTF America?! Are these regional boards private? Can you buy accreditation? Since I am not applying to schools in the states, I can't be bothered to look further, but it does mean there are no national standards.

Also, I would like to know if this princess is pretty, or is she captain of the jousting team if you know what I mean?

Rodents of Unusual Size
I think the standards have dropped considerably within the past thirty years, and Christian schools have always been light in the sciences. And it differs on the region. Texas made a law saying that state schools can't discriminate against Creationists by saying that evolutionary theory was superior to the Creationist viewpoint...all because some fundie girls took such offense after the professor insisted that he was correct in an evolutionary biology course.

So I guess the solution is to just make people feel good about themselves as opposed to smart. Are you that surprised about this aspect of our society?

The McK
I just have to know how you can teach evolutionary biology without making reference to evolution.

dancingshadow
You're a gay terminator right ?

Yes. Pepperdine Systems Model 101.

Goethe and ernie
I actually had a couple of religious dudes sleep on my floor when I was at university, they were over for some debate thing, and due to a scheduling/rooms fuck up on the behalf of the dude organising the whole thing, they ended up with nowhere to sleep... I was friends with the head of the debating society, so they ended up on my floor and uhhh, they were really odd. Really nice dudes, but 100% about Jesus, clearly the kind of guys who were willing to sweep their brains under the carpet for the sake of "walking with Jesus" or whatever. I mean, they were smart enough to be taking part in debate at Cambridge, but not smart enough to recognise that being getting married at 18 is possibly not a totally awesome idea. I don't know, 50% fuck 'em 50% "those dudes were nice, so maybe don't fuck 'em".

No, no, I'm drunk, definitely fuck 'em.

Goethe and ernie
Oh shit, yeah, I missed the entire point of that anecdote, that being that they went to one of these weird Christian colleges. I can't remember which one though.

Parker V Hurley did NOT say parents have no right to object.

In the case, the school warned parents IN ADVANCE they would be teaching tolerance for homosexuals and that gay marriage was allowed in the state. If parents objected, they could opt their children into private schools or whatever. The parents in this case never made a peep until their child was actually read the book King and King, and then claimed their religion freedom was being infringed upon. The courts basically told them they had their chance to object ages back when this was all being decided and move their children to different schools, and that reading a book to a child doesn't constitute forcibly making them love gay people or hating the jeebus.
jangbones
One side of an issue distorting facts to win a political point?

My monocle!

citrusmirakel
Apparently you weren't listening to the man:
"And the courts have ruled that parents have NO RIGHT to object!"

What this means is that in the case of Parker v. Hurley, activist judges took it upon themselves to make the ruling that parents of straight children are not allowed to have any part in the process of raising their children, particularly on the hardfought battle of keeping them straight. Furthermore, it said that while talking about same-sex vs. opposite-sex partnerships, they'd use words like "splendid", cutting edge" and "like a Jolly Rancher" for the former, and "weird", "unpleasant", and "broccoli-like" for the latter.
If a parent complains about this, they get thrown into reeducation centers where it's gay porn and Judy Garland movies all day every day.

"We, the people of California, must come together as one and crush this little girl's dream!"
CharlesSmith
I was just about to type that much much less eloquently. Thank you good sir.

zatojones
First they'll learn about gay marriage. Then what, they'll learn about the existence of gays? NOT IN MY CALIFORNIA.
StanleyPain
"Next thing you know kids will think it's ok to, say, give a mouse a cookie."

IrishWhiskey
Note the common assumption by these anti-gay groups that homosexuality is so attractive an option, as soon as gay marriage is legalized straight people everywhere will start turning gay just to take advantage of it.

Makes you wonder about the motivations behind the wealthy out-of-state Mormon groups who are sponsoring this campaign.

"Gosh darn-it California, STOP TEMPTING ME!"

The McK
You're either gay or you fight it.

StanleyPain
The fundamentalist view on homosexuality is precisely that, though. They DO think that it presents such an attractive option people will turn gay overnight if there are no consequences for being gay. The idea is that homosexuality is the ultimate sin for the sake of pleasure and a spit in the face of god, therefore that makes it incredibly attractive and impossible to resist to anyone just shy of being totally godly.

Of course, the psychological issues of WHY so many fundies believe this are beyond my expertise, but would probably make an interesting study.

Rodents of Unusual Size
My mother told me growing up that homosexuality was illegal and that they all went to prison for being gay.

I was corrected by my 6th grade teacher on that and I thank her wholeheartedly. Fuck, I wish we had the book mentioned above. It would have narrowed my confusion considerably.

Rodents of Unusual Size
Also, yeah, to add to the above, they make it sound like being gay is one big block party. Which makes me think a lot of fundamentalists watch Queer as Folk a lot.

simon666
The anti-gay bigots vulgarity warrants nothing more than insults. FUCK THEM. It is impossible to have any reasonable conversation with these people. Their opinion boils down to the fact they think "fags" are "evil" or "worth-less," and think anything with history is inherently valuable.

"Marriage has always been between a man and a woman." That line of thinking justifies slavery, genocide, rape, and enumerable amoral behaviors. "There have always been slaves." "These people have always been the down fall of our society. They must be wiped out so we can thrive." "People have always been raped." "Voting has traditionally been for men and not women. Women will tarnish the institution of representative democracy." "The people have traditionally always been ruled by a Monarch or living God."

*Sigh*

IrishWhiskey
"We certainly don't want kids finding out about gay marriage do we? We must ban the practice altogether to keep them from learning about it in school, or the internet, or TV... ads...

Wait... Shit."

The Hierophant
It's completely unfair that heterosexuals can be coerced into marriage by their whining, nagging girlfriends and gays can't. No on 8 because if we have to suffer, gays do too.
fluffy
This ad pisses me the hell off. Not one single thing that they show in the ad comes across as a bad thing, to me, and yet they imply it's supposed to be. This deeply offends my sensibilities.
sosage
These five are for this ad playing in the SF Bay Area...and the confusion on MY face when I saw it...
minimalist
That poor little girl. Doesn't she know that this goes against the Lord's plan?

She needs to know that she's not supposed to marry a princess, but instead grow up under the suffocating yoke of her parents' extreme repression and religiously-motivated beatings, until she runs away from home and does anal porn at the age of 17.
Rodents of Unusual Size
Unless by then our wonderful republic of Gilead outlaws that practice as well. If you pass laws, it changes human nature!

Syd Midnight
We must protect future generations of slutty party-wild catholic school girls.

I was just waiting for someone to tie "gay" and "anime" together on this one.

We need a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as a union between a boy and a girl. No adults.

Gay people should have the right to be trapped in loveless marriages like the rest of society.
