No, magnets can't make a perpetual motion machine. It takes at least as much energy to pull magnets apart as they release by pulling together. The same goes in reverse for repulsion. There's no clever arrangement of magnets that can get around that.

I'm glad you guys got permanent magnetism figured out. I got stuck trying to understand in physical terms what the exchange force is and why it acts between unpaired electrons in ferromagnetic materials. Can anyone straighten me out on this?

I think of it as more of an entrance exam. If you don't like finding out how stupid and ignorant you are, you're going to wind up choosing pseudoscience anyways. The hidden truths that THEY don't want you to know etc.
