Funny thing; I was just reading today about Bob Mould, founder of the ur-hipster band "husker du" and "Sugar", was also a script writer for the WCW. It does go a ways towards explaining the explicit homo-eroticism and self-referential quality of the material.

As a fan of Husker Du and pro-wrasslin' when I was in my teenage years I'm actually a little sad that Bob's contribution was during what could arguably (not really) be considered the "Crappiest" part of WCW.
