And here I was thinking he was dead. I've even read his biography!

Know why he was a class act?
Because he was blacklisted by HUAC and had his career trampled by a coalition of jingoist Republicans and racist, anti-Semitic Southern Democrats, yet he comes back just to accept this stupid trophy.
I've always loved Gold Rush. That's the film where I discovered* Chaplin. I was just out of high school watching it in a community college theater and I was the only one laughing out loud (something I rarely did in public theaters, beyond a "heh"). I walked out totally shocked that this old as hell movie was still so funny. In some cases far ahead of most modern (90's at the time) physical comedy.
The scene with the men wrestling the gun is the part I always remember about it.
* Like how everyone around high school age knows the Mona Lisa and had heard of Leonardo da Vinci, but then one day you "discover" the works of Leonardo da Vinci through a cool page of sketches or another painting.
He didn't just go to France, he wasn't allowed back to America because of some trumped up connection to communism.
He was not only English, he helped build Essanay Studios and the foundations of Hollywood itself. His contribution to the construction of film and the toppling of the Edison monopoly cannot be understated. America was his home more than France, perhaps more than England as well. He completely transformed the entertainment business in this country and what our government did to him is a disgrace.
By the by, a lot of the Hollywood blacklisting under HUAC was carried out by agents of white supremacy, members of the Nazi Bund, journalists for The Awakener (a fascist propaganda magazine), the Silver Shirts, and the KKK. Ironic, since HUAC was created by the first and only Jewish congressman (at the time: Samuel Dickstein) to hunt down Nazis and fascists in the USA. A case study in how witch hunts ostensibly conceived for good quickly turn to the dark side. As it so happens, Dickstein may have actually been on the KGB payroll, though his role is not certain and whether or not he provided them with intel is unknown.

Oddly reminiscent of Tiny Tim.
