My mother is convinced that the elf is gay because of this song.
Considering the North Pole elf gender ratio, given what is shown in the special, is about 4 to 1 male to female, I'm gonna guess "yes, Hermie is probably gay but so were most of the other male elves".
Oh no, she would've loved that.

2014's been a rough year so far for RUDOLPH THE RED-NOSED REINDEER veterans, with both Arthur Rankin Jr. and Larry D. Mann (the voice of Yukon Cornelius) dying in January alone. At least they got to live through 50 annual network TV airings of RUDOLPH (from 1964 through to 2013), so they had long full lives.
Other cartoons and stop-motion animations that Arthur Rankin Jr. produced (and sometimes directed) with Jules Bass: Santa Claus is Coming to Town, the Little Drummer Boy, the Jackson 5ive cartoon, the Hobbit (1977), the Last Unicorn, and Thundercats.

These movies all scared the shit out of me when I was kid. I guess his heart was in the right place but damn that's some creepy, creepy shit.
Mark Twain would like a word with you.
Meh, I was all grown by the time I saw that shit on poeTV.
My brother had a problem with Rudolph's nose noise when he was little.
I can't say I ever thought of the special as "nightmare fuel", but the one thing as an adult I do find a little off-putting is Hermie removing all of the teeth of the Abominable Snowmonster of the North, thus rendering him docile. I mean, it brings the dentist subplot full-circle, but I find it cruel, removing my teeth certainly wouldn't make me docile, and it sends a questionable message to kids about the benevolence of dentistry in general.
