I could never get anywhere in these games, but the music is great. Was looking online to see if Ben Daglish did the music for this one too, and found out that my favorite commie site is dead and gone.

This game must of exploded heads in '88, it's such a beautiful example of the illusion of an open world made with very limited resources.

I remember playing the first one on my C64 back in the day and while the graphics and music were top tier for the time, the gameplay was generally confusing as fuck, and I never finished it because the confusing puzzles and shit. One of the reasons a lot of these old games were so vague and difficult was because it was generally accepted that explaining things inside the game (like what certain items do or providing certain clues) would make the game too easy to pirate, so they would attempt to circumvent this by including a manual that had a lot of essential information and the I remember the book for this having descriptions of what the ninja gear did, but even WITH that, it was often too crazy trying to figure out what magic combination of inventory items would get you past whatever.

I think a lot of games from back in the day are often given the "ridiculously hard totally random puzzles" label because people forget that was often a sort of copy protection. There were obvious ones, but a lot of silly things ended up in the flavor text of manuals to do that sort of thing.

My family also got #1 with our C64. I was quite young at the time, about 8 maybe? I also remember mind-blowing graphics and sound but impossible gameplay. I would just wander around a bit and then die. Also I remember this game taking aages (like half an hour or more) to load from the tape.

The games I remember most fondly from the C64 were Turrican and Turrican 2. I was actually able to make some progress in them at the time as the gameplay consisted of jump around and blast shit. Also I loved the cover artwork + graphics and music

Never played it (had a Vic-20 but not a C64) but that opening cinematic is fairly amazing for what I've seen of the C64, almost on par with the cinematics from the NINJA GAIDEN arcade game.

The NES version of this game (titled simply "The Last Ninja" but it's based on the sequel) has inferior graphics with less background detail but seems to be faster without the lengthy re-draw every single time the ninja changes screens.

I see this game's from System 3, whom I presume, without looking it up on Wikipedia, is the exact same studio that, two decades later, made that FERRARI CHALLENGE: TROFEO PIRELLI game on the PS2 (also on the PS3, but I don't have one). which I like because it's pretty much the only serious racing simulation on the PS2 that let you race a wide number of Ferraris from all eras of Ferrari history. There's also OUTRUN 2006 COAST 2 COAST, which I love but it's not in any way a realistic simulator.

Really technically advanced. I'm amazed that it's playable at all. I sure as hell wouldn't have made it far when I was a kid though.
