Oh ya I watched the shit out of this after Pee Wee, years before I knew that he also did Fritz the Cat or that Gary Panter did the set design on Pee Wee.

If I recall correctly, this show was cancelled because some Parents' Watchdog group accused it of glamorizing drug use. The offending act was in a scene when Mighty Mouse sniffs a flower and it restores his strength. Obvious metaphor for cocaine.

Haha that's pretty ironic given that Pee Wee had that Sun Tea episode, and all they did was put up the disclaimer that brewing tea in the sun like Pee Wee did can lead to harmful bacteria.. I wikipediaed it. More ironically, Bakshi said "go ahead and cut the scene" because if there was controversy among parents, kids might learn what cocaine was in the first place, be curious about it, and Bakshi didn't want that at all. The kids wouldn't have known the difference if nothing was said. The only people who would are parents who either did the drug, or saw it in a movie that depicted its use. Which.. I guess Fritz the Cat, yeah he was kinda fucked there. But he was still the voice of reason from what I can tell in an otherwise idiotic debate.

I don't have kids so I don't pay attention to these things, but do shows like Adventure Time and Sponge Bob, et al constantly get the same barrage from concerned watchdog groups?

How about fucking Underdog?

The secret compartment in my ring I fill
With an Underdog Super Energy Pill!

No metaphor required. DRUGS, apparently some kind of speed, have been saving Underdog's snausages for about 50 years now. Has anyone ever objected?

Or Scooby Doo for that matter. At least when I was in college, everyone would refer to pot brownies as Scooby Snacks, and I'm pretty sure everybody knew that.

sorry zest but THAT is what you find ironic about Pee Wee's Playhouse?

I love how back when video stores were a thing they'd usually put the Pee Wee Herman Show in the kids' section.

Bat-Bat drives a buttmobile.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-17

Isn't it a "ManMobile", hence the human appendages?

I love the crude, jerky, handmade look of this stuff.

cognitivedissonance - 2014-12-17

It should be noted that Bruce Timm actually started on this show, and his boss was John Kricfalusi.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2014-12-17

Yep, Kricfalusi is listed in the credits as "Senior director". Boy, does that make sense! Thanks for the info, Izzy

Oh wait, IZZY is my nickname for Infinite Zest, how embarassing!

Can I be Cogdizzy?

:)

It's funny because John K was the one who was so upset about the flower scene being taken out. I didn't really look that hard, but was he using a rolled up dollar bill or a hollowed out pen or the butt of a Parliment Cigarette? Because all I see from the Wiki picture is some pink powder in his hand that goes up his nose. In all fairness, given that it was John K and Bakshi, it might have been a bit of an in-joke, but other shows like Animaniacs did that all the time, either alluding to R-rated movies full of drug use or straight up sexual innuendo like that "Finger Prince" pun. I somehow don't believe that Bakshi "despises drugs" but who knows? Fugazi's always been one of my favorite bands to smoke weed to and besides one time with Al Jourgenson nobody in the band has ever touched the stuff.

fluffy - 2015-02-25

I would have never guessed that Bakshi despises drugs based on his other works.
