My dad used to take me to Dr. Demento's Reed College live shows when I was a kid (I think he still does them) mostly because they were across the street from our house. I didn't know he had this much of a following: the lecture hall was never to capacity and I'd say it only sat 100 people. Oh well, he got me into They Might Be Giants, which was great until They Might Be Giants got me out of They Might Be Giants.

Got me in to Zappa and the Descendants.

I taped this off the air when it was first broadcast.

Oh yeah, Zappa and Beefheart and Devo too, to name a few. Don't think he ever played any Descendents but I was pretty young. I did sneak into a lecture of Milo's when he was teaching at UW Madison though, just to hear him talk. I'd like to think that I wasn't the only one, even though it was like listening to a foreign language.

I looked it up and he still comes around, and was just here in late January, for 5 dollars if you weren't a student. I guess it was about protest songs and the birth of hip hop. That would've been cool.

Hey played Descendants on a "short songs" episode, I remember that because a friend and I taped it. It was "I Like Food."

Yeah I would've guessed it was that song. What's interesting is that he was sort of the grandfather of "college rock" as far as I can tell when he was general manager of Reed's radio station (now 107.1FM or streaming at xray.fm; I'm not being paid to say this) most college radio stations in the early '60s were nothing more than announcements of goings-on about campus and what was for lunch, things like that. I'm sure there were others around the country doing the same thing but it's still pretty cool.

I've never heard some of these! 16:12 is brilliant...wait is that Mary Tyler Moore??

Oh, man. I had this on VHS back in the day.

I wish I still had the "Al TV" tapes I made then, too. I know you can find the bumper segments and stuff, but it's not the same without the videos and commercials.

If you ever find them, figure out a way to get them to me and I'll make some good transfers, I've got a pretty solid, broadcast quality VHS transfer setup these days. Stuff that would have been in the mid 4 figures at the turn of the century costs absolutely nothing now that everyone's gone digital.

I had to stay up until 1 AM to hear Dr. Demento back when I was a little kid. Him, Joe Bob Briggs' Monster Vision, and Adult Swim are all responsible for me not being able to fall asleep until around 3-4 AM.

we were raised by the same media...I loved all of those.

Doctor Demento's show was the first place I heard Devo (Jocko Homo) and also Tom Leher, who was a great songwriter if ever there was one, and She'll Silverstein, along with the All Yankovics and Benny Bells of the world. During the 70s, I listened in New York, during the 80s, I listened in Maine.

Always tons of fun, the Doctor often provided an interesting historical context for his old records. I remember learning interesting facts about prohibition, and the dawn of electrical recording.
