ashtar.
Age of Ultron was shit. This is a stupid thing to get mad about, but he deserves whatever harassment he gets for making a movie that I didn't like. Mob justice is the only use for twitter.

what the shit is going on with the art in that

I haven't read PA in years and every time someone links to an individual comic I'm just like... what? why? how is this still a thing?

How long has PA just been pretentious Tumblr-worthy rambles with completely unrelated, goopy-faced art-esque scrawlings?

Bobonne
Except he's come out and said that, no, he wasn't driven off twitter by the EVIL FEMINISTS. It just takes way too much time and is too addictive, and he'd signed up reluctantly way back when as it was.

Once again, manufactured outrage at outrate culture culture strikes again. Strange how often you hear about them, huh?

Five for bullshit.
Hooker
So him getting tired of Twitter just happened to line up when he was getting flamed?

Xenocide
Joss Whedon is ALWAYS getting flamed on Twitter, and feminists aren't even close to the only group that does it. That's what happens when you're one of the most visible bastions of nerd culture. If this shit bothered him he would have left years ago

You might as well have said, "So him getting tired of Twitter JUST HAPPENS to line up with the one time he was breathing oxygen?"

John Holmes Motherfucker
It also lined up with the release of his huge summer movie. With that all-important opening weekend in the rear view mirror, it seems pretty plausible that he might want some private time, especially if he's got some writing to do.

How stupid does someone have to be to be a feminist and issue death threats against ANYBODY, but especially against Anita Sarkeesian's highest profile defender and the creator of Buffy? Over a couple of lines of dialogue? She was bonding with the Hulk, okay? Idiots.

And fuck you, Boogie, for not waiting for Whedon to comment before posting your speculation and rumour.

Age of Ultron doesn't hold together as well as the first movie, but I still loved it. The plot's a mess, but the dialogue and action is as good as ever, and that's what counts. I love seeing my childhood favorites talk to each other like credible human beings. The relationship between Cap and Tony is maybe my favourite part. It's got the pBest Stan Lee Cameo ever. The CGI Hulk continues to improve with each movie.

What I love most about these big name franchise movies, not only the comic book heroes but the Star Trek reboot, and hopefully the new Star Wars Movies, is that moment when one is SURPRISED BY THE FAMILIAR, when something you knew from years ago connects in an unexpected way, Lighting up those old neurons with so much pleasure. Leonard Nimoy's unexpected entrance in the 2009 Star Trek movie is my favorite example. I'm pretty sure I laughed and clapped my hands like a three year old.

I'm really glad that I can't handle twitter.
I have a feeling like it's going to fall apart in a few years.

John Holmes Motherfucker
From what I understand they're having financial problems, but Twitter itself isn't that bad. It's much less annoying than facebook, and it's a great way for celebrities to interact with ordinary people. I've been retweeted by Jeffrey Tambor and Christopher Nolan, favorited by Mo Rocca, and got a reply from Mary Lynn Rajskub.

The main problem with Twitter is the bloggers and vloggers who use it as a source. Note that nothing really happened on Twitter, until a bunch of attention hungry c list youtubers decided to fabricate a story from a few tweets. If you want to invent a "trend" you can find tweets to back up any ridiculous thing you like. Here's three tweets out of the millions posted during the academy awards to support my premise that people are tired of Jenmnifer Lawrence. That kind of thing.

Bobonne
The only thing twitter is good for is raising bloodthirsty mobs ready to tear someone's life to shreds when they make a bad joke they didn't think through very well.

And since that's terrible, twitter isn't good for anything.

EvilHomer
>> it's a great way for celebrities to interact with ordinary people.

I'm not sure that's a good thing, Mr Holmes! "Ordinary people" need less celebrity-culture bullshit, not more.

John Holmes Motherfucker
>>The only thing twitter is good for is raising bloodthirsty mobs ready to tear someone's life to shreds when they make a bad joke they didn't think through very well.

This is lieterally not true, and there's about 8 different kinds of hyperbole here. If this is a reference to #CancelColbert, let's recall what actually happened to colbert. He got Letterman's Job.

I repeat: Nothing much happened on Twiter. It was on youtube that a nonevent became an event. YouTube comments are still raging and rumor mongering about Feminists and SJWs turning on Out of all the millions of feminists on Twitter, and all the millions of people who saw Age of Ultron, how many tweets angry tweets are we talking about? I'll bet it's less than a thousand.

All the scary, bloodthirsty, Lord of the flies shit happens somewhere else, like Reddit or 8chan... but mostly it's youtube. Youtube is where elaborate narratives are constructed from anecdote and hyperbole and become enshrined in misleading videos by opportunistic hucksters. Youtube is starting to scare me.

It's neither a good thing nor a bad thing per se, but I think that direct interaction is the opposite of traditional celbrity culture.

John Holmes Motherfucker
God, I don't do well when I can't edit my posts.

If your thoughts fit comfortably in 140 characters, Twitter is the right medium for you. I'm no rocket scientist, but even I generally think in more than 140-char blocks. (Those two sentences took up 172 chars.)

Twitter may make it easier to contact celebrities, but all in all I don't think that's a good thing. I suspect our tribal ape brains get confused by celebrity, where there is a high-ranking ape in our tribe that we never get to interact with; better to not lead our ape brains on with hopes of contacting celebrities.

(This is not to say I'm immune; I once Tweeted the "Broad City" stars with the idea that they could do an episode where one day's worth of weed somehow lasts them eight days, all Hanukkah-like. At the time I thought it was a capital idea; right about now it seems forced and blunt. Haha, I said "blunt".)

EvilHomer
Bort - I have no idea what "Broad City" is, but that sounds like a neat idea for an episode! If they don't use it, you should.

I agree with you 100% on Twitter. Speaking of, I am still looking for start-up capital for my social media micro-microblog (nano-blog?) service, DoublePlus Good. (it is restricted to 'tweeting' from a list of one-to-three word statements, each one pre-written by DoublePlusGood staff, including a "premium" service with which users can ++g up to one whole entire sentence that has been written for them by either a popular celebrity or a paid advertiser.)

EvilHomer
D+G's name derives from my service's cool signature feature, whereby users can "rate" each nanoblogged ++g (known colloquially as "quacks") on a sliding scale of "Goodness" - from Ungood all the way up to DoublePlus Good! Eventually, I am hoping that D+G's celebrity authors will fight each other (physically fight each other, with punches and everything) over the honor of creating the world's largest number of doubleplus rated ++gs.

The rating feature also gives the plebs something to do, which is important since they won't be writing anything themselves.

Bort
Dude, go check out "Broad City"; it's a comedy written by its two stars, about a couple of pot-smoking college graduates living their impoverished / parent-supported lives in NYC.

http://www.hulu.com/broad-city

They are Jewish but don't seem to be particularly religious, which is why I thought the Hanukkah / weed thing might be a fit. Not that I had space to flesh it out in 140 chars, but my thought was that the two of them start out the episode panicking because they're nearly out of weed, and they keep trying to score a little pot money but it never pans out, but they also keep finding little stashes they'd set aside at some indeterminate point in the past -- in a sock, at the bottom of a box of dog biscuits, and so on. After the eighth day they get their normal paychecks and they've lived the Hanukkah miracle.

John Holmes Motherfucker
>>If your thoughts fit comfortably in 140 characters, Twitter is the right medium for you. I'm no rocket scientist, but even I generally think in more than 140-char blocks. (Those two sentences took up 172 chars.)

>>If your thoughts fit in 140 characters, Twitter's great. I'm no rocket scientist, but even I need a little more room. (22 characters to spare)

Brevity. It's the soul of (t)wit. A little editing never hurt anybody. .

As long as you can fit a link in there, you can tweet a Dickens novel if you like. Twitlonger.com will automatically take everything everything after the first 100 characters or so and put it in a link.

Certain creative people are geniuses at the format.

(TV's) Frank Conniff: "George W. Bush gives Jeb Bush foreign policy advice, but only after Jeb agrees to tell him about the rabbits."

Joyce Carol Oates: Newly identified disorder SIS: "Selective Indignation Syndrome."

It's not really about celebrity. It's about economy, and a format that allows communication on a huge scale. Catie Wayne has become quite skilled at communicating with her thousands of fans by favoriting tweets.

Sometimes it is about celebrity. Its pretty powerful to get an absolutely insane tweet from Amanda Bynes, or to experience Weird Al's reaction to Michael Jackson death in real time.

That Broad City idea is fucking genius, by the way.

My favorite part is where he gives a shout-out to Anita Sarkeesian and praises her work.

Now we just wait for the same fatlords who were crying for Joss 12 hours ago to issue a fatwa against him.

They're comparing him to a battered woman who claims to have walked into a door.

Yeah, remember how when Anita was the one getting the nasty tweets from the Gators, it was no big deal?

INTERNET TIMESAVING TIP: Avoid reading or looking at anything related to Twitter or Joss Whedon and free up hours of your day!
EvilHomer
I don't have time to sit through this video or wade through all the links. If you would be so kind, could one of you please give me a summary of what is going on, who this person is, and precisely which group of fatties are mad at which other group of fatties.
EvilHomer
And speaking of not having enough time, would anyone here like to go live in an Iron Age village with me? Only for like a few months.

John Holmes Motherfucker
Sorry. Bronze age is as low as I go.

Nikon
@EvilHomer a bunch of SJWs chased Whedon off of twitter. He denied it because he has battered wife syndrome.

EvilHomer
Iron Age came after the Bronze Age.

I think it would do you good, Mr Holmes. It'd give yous something to do, other than fretting about all those pretty young girls who need you to rescue them. You could even bring along some cats, although bear in mind we may need to eat them eventually!

EvilHomer
Well, if the SJWs hate Whedon, then I'm rooting for the SJWs. Whedon is a dumb jerkface and I hate him; did you know Wesleyan University's film studies class averaged, like, thirty boxes worth of material? And it was entirely Whedon's fault? FACT.

I would still invite him to the Iron Age village, of course, but I'd make sure he got the most unpleasant jobs, like shoveling nightsoil, or giving sponge-baths to Mr Holmes.

NewHeavenSockman
whedon sucks and i don't care who or what chased him off, really im just sick of having to see boogie's fat fucking "ennnw im so emoshonal about mean ppl" video everywhere i look online
Enjoy
I have no idea who josh wheadon is
John Holmes Motherfucker
I can't let this alone before I say this:

I became a committed feminist after being exposed to online harassment of women. People who call themselves "feminists" who harass and threaten ANYBODY can go to the same hell as the bullies who call themselves "gamers". If I wasn't against death threats, I'd tell you just how much I'd like to send them there. Really, right now I could go there.

To me, there's just no difference. I will judge you by your actions. Your motives are your business.
EvilHomer
Why NOT go there now? As long as you're not making a credible threat, threaten away!

John Holmes Motherfucker
I'm satisfied with the implication.

I understand the difference between a credible threat, and a noncredible threat, and I'll acknowledge that the difference matters. But I'm against all threats, as a matter of ethics, or maybe more precisely as a matter of courtesy. I'm not advocating any legal remedies, but it's not legitimate discourse. There ought to be things you just don't do on the internet because they're terrible. People who threaten people in bars or restaurants are generally asked to leave.

I may be backing away from my previous position since last we discussed this. If I am, very well then, so be it. If my position needs changing, I'm happy to do it.

EvilHomer
Well good on that, then! As of a matter of courtesy, of course that's acceptable, so I'll just fill in some of my favorite death threats and imagine that you've implied them.
