Crispin Glover doing Woody Allen doing Andy Warhol.

infinite zest - 2015-08-12

Yeah I kind of liked the Andy in the Valerie Solanas biopic more.. sorry Crispin. I still love you, you auto-manipulator you.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-12

The I Shot Andy Warhol Warhol is the only really good cinematic Warhol other than the actual Warhol.

garcet71283 - 2015-08-12

Gotta put my vote in for the Men In Black 3 Andy Warhol.

Makes the most sense.

infinite zest - 2015-08-12

Heh I thought you were joking but I looked it up. I never really got into MiB because Will Smith, while a good actor, turns everything into his movie, which doesn't translate to action or sci-fi, for me anyway, the way it does Oscar-worthy performances that he's proven himself more than capable of doing.

I dunno, I guess if I'm going to be suspended in disbelief for a couple of hours watching a movie I don't want to be reminded of Big Willie Style, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch, N-Sync, etc. but that scene was good.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-13

It's interesting watching that scene since the rumors of how much of the 50s and 60s modern art world was secretly funded by the government have been verified by some of the people who ran it.

Of course the handful of people I've talked with about it who were actually alive and involved in the modern art world at the time have all known for decades, but still this joke is funnier now that we know it isn't really a joke.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-13

ACtually I just looked it up and it wasn't as big a revelation as I thought, I thought the recent new admissions were the first time the press had taken it seriously, but the Independent did a big story on it all the way back in '95. So disregard what I said abut MiB 3 being clever.

infinite zest - 2015-08-13

It's still clever for a mainstream action-comedy to make a reference like that though. I was pretty young when Independence Day came out so Area 51 being an actual place was pretty cool, even though the location and the conspiracy was common knowledge for some people. I just knew the name from the arcade game.

Hailey2006 - 2015-08-13

What the Luxury Comedy version?

Hailey2006 - 2015-08-13

What ABOUT the Luxury Comedy version I meant!

Cena_mark - 2015-08-13

I felt David Bowie did a great job portraying Warhol in Basquiot.

baleen - 2015-08-12

I remember this completely bullshit made up fantasy about the 60's that helped sell shirts at the mall!

infinite zest - 2015-08-12

Which one? Warhol or The Doors? I remember not listening to The Doors in high school because every other kid had that Jim Morrison shirt on (or a Steal Your Face patch on their backpack)..

Don't remember too much Warhol until college. I could kind of tell who I wanted to hang out with or not by whether they had a Marilyn Monroe or Campbells poster in their dorm room (those were the ones I didn't want to hang out with.)

infinite zest - 2015-08-12

That being said my first job in college was working at this record/convenience store that also sold the kinds of shirts you'd get at Hot Topic, and I remember mindlessly folding thousands and thousands of Campbells and Che shirts and thinking that Warhol and Guevara would both think that was kinda funny..

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-13

I watched this for the first time since I was a kid this week and it's both worse and better than I remembered. The cinematography and editing is pretty entertaining now that I've seen a lot of the original stuff it was referencing/ripping off, but everything else is even worse than I remembered.

Also, with the benefit of time it's now more apparent than ever how 90s all of the production design looks. I even saw an extra wearing mom jeans.

baleen - 2015-08-13

Oliver Stone is such a sensationalist, but at the time there was this self-perpetuated aura of auteur genius about him. Every Oliver Stone movie is basically a middle aged guy with coke dick trying to fuck a prostitute that has absolutely no interest in her profession, but he knows he has to get it up if he's going to have any credibility with himself.

I think John Waters probably enjoys The Doors. This is definitely the best scene in the movie, especially out of context.

misterbuns - 2015-08-13

I just ran into crispin glover at the gym.

infinite zest - 2015-08-13

Cool! I can't imagine him lifting weights though.. I picture him as a swimmer.

Two Jar Slave - 2015-08-13

Has anyone here watched the films Glover directed?

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-13

I saw him screen What Is It? and do half the Big Slide Show a few years ago, it was great.

Two Jar Slave - 2015-08-13

Can you describe it a bit? I've read about What Is It? and It's Fine on the internet, but from what people say there's really no point watching the movies without his accompanying presentation.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-14

The screening was just the movie, which is good on its own if you'rein to that kind of thing (if a narrativeless allegory about Steven Speilberg being a pedophile, with an (almost) all down's syndrome cast sounds good to you then you should watch it, the old VHS screener can be torrented). The Big Slideshow is him reading from the books he published in the 80s that are also the basis of the "The Big Problem" LP, with photos of the pages he's reading. It'skind of hard to describe how he does it but it's a lot less ambiguous than the album in regard to what his intent was.

Then he has a Q&A. I only caught the first hour of that, but he spent most of it talking about the ethics of killing three snails on film despite being a strict vegan, and that he considers eating plants and eating animals morally equivalent because plants are (sentient?) organisms too.

Old_Zircon - 2015-08-14

Basically, if you weren't sure whether Crispin Glover was are and in control of what he does, you will be after seeing him present it, but not in a way that diminishes it at all. It definitely improved the Glover experience for me.
