As someone who didn't really follow Macross other than passing interest due to Battletech (and the legal battles) ....
Is this one of those anime series that ends with magical love powers defeating the villains?
it's actually fairly dark, and while singing helps the hero a tiny bit, all villains are defeated with high caliber gun bullets.
Fur is Murder
Depends on which part of Macross you mean.
While I've only seen a little of it, Macross 7 is probably as close as you're going to get to 'love powers saving the day.' That's the show where you can shoot energy beams at space devils by singing really hard.
My answer only applies to macross plus, which probably has the least "magical" singing of the whole franchise, though singing is still a present what with the main villain being a virtual diva. Also all the characters are adults and there are no awkward virgin love shenanigans.
Sanest Man Alive
garcet: in the original series at least, it was more like "vastly superior invaders have so little understanding of human culture that when exposed to something as common as music, they are flabbergasted long enough for the scrappy underdog humans to cram 5 000 000 megatons of exploding laser death up their woohoos" Kind of like War of the Worlds, but with aesthetics instead of accidental germ warfare.
Macross 7 decided to turn that into "MUSIC IS THE WEAPON" and as much as that might sound hilarious to watch, it just feels like reading somebody's terrible fanfic.
Is that worse or better that Macross Delta's interdimensional intestinal space bacteria?
