Thanks all. I think I mentioned it last year she was battling ovarian cancer. It was almost exactly a year to the day from when she was diagnosed that she passed away in June. Fast, evil shit.

King Arthur, you better make it man, at least another year.

Even schlock was shot on decent film stock in the 60s.

I'm sad he's dead but also shocked because I thought he died over a decade ago.

That's HG Lewis himself on those SLOW kettle drums.

In October 1977, me and my bff Frankie went to the College in the woods cafeteria at SUNY Binghamton to see what had been annouced in the school paper as a showing of Night of the Living Dead. We were 19. Naturally, we showed up high, and without word of explanation, we saw 2000 Maniacs.

I would argue that 2000 Maniacs, while certainly cheap and primitive in its style and approach, was not shlock in the way that Blood Feast was shlock. This was before the internet, and before home video, and before The Golden Turkey Awards, and we just didn't know what this was. 2000 Maniacs is pretty compelling. Besides the extreme violence, which just got under your skin, it was so RAW! Frankie and I were shocked. We kept going outside, smoking more dope, talking about how fucked up the movie was, and making it back inside for all the fucked up parts.

It wasn't until around 1984 that I was able to special order a book about HG Lewis and his amazing exploitation movies.

Here's an interesting fact. I'm not going to explain the plot of 2000 Maniacs, I have a lot to do today, and you can find it easy enough. It only hit me a couple of years ago that 2000 Maniacs came out the same year (1964) that 3 civil rights workers from up north were murdered in Missisippi. The movie was released 3/20/64. The murders took place 6/21/64. For me, that definitely makes the movie extra creepy.

Maybe someone here will know the answer to this.

When I as about thirteen or fourteen, I happened to see part of a schlocky horror movie on late-night TV while flipping the channels. I think I missed the first half-hour or so, so I didn't catch the name. It looked like It had been made in the mid-to-late-1970s based on the hairstyles and clothes.

From what I can remember, it was about a family of children living out in a rural area. I remember the two older kids getting around the dirt roads in a 1950s-era pickup. Their parents were deceased, had abandoned the kids or were otherwise absent. The two oldest children, in their teens, were trying to provide for their younger siblings. Naturally, this led to cannibalism.

Come to think of it, the parents may have been eaten by the children. Or maybe there weren't any parents to begin with. The whole house full of kids had a kind of cult-like vibe. Maybe they were supposed to be like the Manson Family?

I can remember a scene of a man being knocked out by the kids and waking up to find himself in a bathtub with the kids all gathered around him. As soon as he was conscious, they began attacking him with knives & forks and eating him alive while he screamed. Well, he sort of screamed. He went "AH! AH! AH!" like he'd just stubbed his toe. It was hilariously obvious the kids were simply scooping up wads of crushed tomatoes and cramming them into their mouths

And I fell asleep on the couch before seeing the end of the movie, so I can't tell you how it ended.

I've tried several times over the years to find out the name of this movie. It was wonderfully awful. Does anyone here know it?

Great movie, although I'll always be a 2000 Maniacs guy.

Most of the murders in 2000 Maniacs have an authentic nightmare quality that even Freddy Kruger can't match. I can't speak for anyone else, but my nightmares aren't usually about murderers or monsters. More often they're about being the center of attention, being vulnerable, being laughed at, being the only person who doesn't understand what's going on. The Pleasant Valley "Centennial Celebration" where people are horribly murdered for the whole town's amusement evokes these feelings like nothing else I can think of right now.

The really scary and creepy thing about "2,000 Maniacs" is how many Southerners love it and how much they love it.

I grew up in Alabama and Florida. It's as beloved a movie as "Gone With the Wind" around here, the ultimate Southern White people revenge fantasy. It's sort of like how people failed to see Larry the Cable Guy was a character created to mock them and embraced him as a mascot.
