I am somewhat in agreement with her here. If Resident Evil 5 wasn't racist then it was at the very least a horribly misguided Japanese import. Your All-American white superhero, biceps the size of small moons, punches black faces all over not-Mogadishu.

But making a case that the game was racist is a moot point; we already knew that from watching the trailer back in 2007. Also the game itself was not very good.

Stopped clock, twice a day. Nita is still a humorless, sex-negative censorcrat. I watch her for the same reason I used to watch Nancy Grace, to yell at my screen.
Caminante Nocturno
She's more like Ann Coulter than Nancy Grace in the kind of punditry they peddle.

They're also similarly ugly.

bongoprophet
Ugh... I suddenly feel like FPP-ing the whole front page with Sarah Haskins--videos

Also Q9D, show me where Anita is sex-negative. Pointing out sexism doesn't equal being sex-negative.

Xenocide
I will never get tired of seeing people feel personally threatened by someone saying video games are not flawless as a medium.

John Holmes Motherfucker
What I'd like to see is a real example, from the text, of Anita advocating censorship (not just advocating for developers to consider her idea of better games, which is something any critic would do).

What I'd also like to see is an example, from the text, of Anita claiming that video games actually do incite real violence, (instead of claiming that video violence promotes the active perpetrator's point of view.)

These are positions she's supposed to be taking, but I've never seen it. I might not, because I think her videos are like watching paint dry in slow motion. So someone who claims to know about this, help me out.

Quad9Damage
@bongoprophet

Her disdain and dismissal of sex workers.

Her nitpicking every frame where there is a hint of cleavage or skin exposure, i.e. Jade from "Beyond Good and Evil" is dressed appropriately *except for that midriff...*

All of it encouraging and perpetuating a culture of men to sexually harass women in public—the same way video game violence supposedly encouraged aggression. That is her central thesis. Look it up, it's in her own words. And if a causal relationship between video game violence and murder has never been proven, I'd love to see scientific evidence that jiggling titties make men grab more asses.

The cult mentality caused by her videos has led to companies localizing and in house self-censoring, lest they face the wrath of a social media backlash. When her movement against immodesty landed her everything from magazine articles to speaking engagements at the U.N, companies saw her bugaboos as threats to their profit margins. No, she hasn't actively come out and called for censorship, but having an unlockable bikini costume disabled or a prairie dress painted over a female character's halter top suits her just fine. Those are the kinds of 'safe' games she wants everybody else playing.

She is the Andrea Dworkin of video games.

I don't know about this tactic, cucaracha kidraper. The day we start ignoring people's arguments because they're ugly is the day we start ignoring people's arguments because they watch shitty anime and want to non-consensually fuck little kids.

>>>All of it encouraging and perpetuating a culture of men to sexually harass women in public—the same way video game violence supposedly encouraged aggression. That is her central thesis. Look it up, it's in her own words.

And yet you don't have a quote for me. Which is what "from the text" means. If she says it over and over, there must be a place where SHE SAYS IT, RIGHT?

John Holmes Motherfucker
>>>All of it encouraging and perpetuating a culture of men to sexually harass women in public

If she's saying that the gamer culture encourages harassment, don't you think that may be because of all the harassment?

>>>The cult mentality caused by her videos has led to companies localizing and in house self-censoring,

Self-censorship? Do you mean "editing"?

lest they face the wrath of a social media backlash.

Are you fucking joking with me? "a social media backlash? " ARE YOU FUCKING JOKING WITH ME?

>>No, she hasn't actively come out and called for censorship, but

I didn't think so.

"The cult mentality caused by her videos has led to companies localizing and in house self-censoring"

One time someone disagreed with me and had stronger arguments than I did, so I self-censored and adopted his arguments. FIRST AMENDMENT VIOLATION!

Born in the RSR
OK:

RE5 is one of my all time favorite games. I played the shit out of it solo and co-op, mercenaries mode, I love it's mechanics, I love it's levels, I love the dumb plot and silly monsters. I love punching boulders!

She has a point, I don't deny it, but what's the solution here? Just do away with silly eye-candy? Or manage it better?

PS: OL costume Sheva is way sexier than Tribal, just throwing that out there.
John Holmes Motherfucker
She has a point, I don't deny it, but what's the solution here? Just do away with silly eye-candy? Or manage it better?

There's no such thing as a "solution", there's just a discussion. Thirty years ago, some movie critics, including Roger Ebert, who I admire, spoke out against violent slasher movies. Did anything change? We still have violent slasher movies. I think we're more aware of them, and the movies themselves are more aware.

Born in the RSR
I never thought of it that way.

I guess I'm used to the dudely adolescent way of thinking in absolutes, not discussions and nuances.

I don't need to defend it, because it's not an attack it's just a discussion, and we can learn things from it and do better by other people and for ourselves next time around... Woah!

Old_Zircon
Who do you fucks think you are having a civilized, rational, productive discussion in the comments of [insert poetv drama trigger]? NOT ON MY INTERNET!

Two Jar Slave
Can we use this space to talk about how good Resi7 is?

IT'S GOOD.

REAL GOOD.

Omega Race remains scandal-free. And it even took place in the days before gay marriage.

I was just thinking that we never get a sense of the T block's cultural heritage in Tetris.

StanleyPain
And, as usual, she makes tons of totally salient and accurate points, all of which will be totally ignored in a sobbing, hysterical, manbaby shitstorm of "NUH UH!!! NUH UH!!! NUH UH!!" Nothing says "freethinker" like decades-old anti-Semitic slurs and Pepe memes.
Anaxagoras
Let's not forget about calling her ugly and/or a fraud. Can't have a man-baby meltdown w/out at least one of those two chestnuts.

Pretty much.

despite everything, it's still hilarious to see grown men feel personally slighted over a video game review. Video games play such an outsized role in their identities that criticism of a game they enjoy is taken as an attack on their very character. That never gets old.

>>>despite everything, it's still hilarious to see grown men feel personally slighted over a video game review. Video games play such an outsized role in their identities that criticism of a game they enjoy is taken as an attack on their very character. That never gets old.

Well, they're probably not entirely grown men. I think that identifying with the culture you consume is part of forming your identity. When I was 21, around 1980, it was the anti-disco movement. I saw Disco as a threat to everything I stood for, because I was a punk-glam rocker. Gamergate was no worse than this. Actually, that's no longer true, thanks to Brietbart and Steve Bannon.

Old_Zircon
I'm at all not saying it was for you in particular, but in the bigger picture the anti-disco thing was a homophobic dogwhistle for the backlash against the gay rights movement.

So the comparison with Gamergate is especially appropriate.

Xenocide
It's so weird how Anita has been doing mild feminist criticism of video games for years now and yet somehow the entire industry has not been permanently destroyed. I kept hearing that would happen, and yet nothing. I'm sure it's coming any day now, though.
SolRo
Manbaby tears are keeping the industry afloat

dairyqueenlatifah
She's like the Michelle Malkin of video game punditry.
Nikon
Indeed. No stars for her.

Maggot Brain
She's more the like cutco of games to me. She makes some valid points in the same way that cutco makes some good knifes but this isn't about the product, it's about the "life style" and getting the sweet drip feed of cash from the adherents of said life style.

The real problem I have with her is that her that actual ideas for female empowerment in games aren't very good. She made pitch video for a game where a Princes has to reclaim her Kingdom, fine, but the means to which she does this is by having her lead mentally mastectomized and after all is said and done she gives up her Kingdom in order to make it a democracy. So by the end of everything our strong female is still at lower level in society, great :\

John Holmes Motherfucker
She's the Michelle Malkin of Andrea Dworkins

Raggamuffin
Okay so, since half of all gamers are women at this point, isn't a feminist perspective on game design a good thing?

If as a man, you're too insecure to tolerate someone taking away your precious virtual boobdoll, maybe question some of your convictions?
Two Jar Slave
Are some boobdoll fantasy games okay to make, with the assumption that they're unrealistic eye candy designed for hetero guys slash anyone who likes that stuff?

Or is this a case of Never An Okay Fantasy?

I ask because there was recently an interesting conversation here about mainstream versus "niche" porn, and whether there was a place for both.

Raggamuffin
I don't think I really know the answer. I just think that as games get more and more popular and mainstream, developers should be more aware of what they are communicating and who they are communicating it to. What bothers me is that gamer culture tends to freak out when someone even bothers to ask the question.

Two Jar Slave
Makes sense, yeah.

Scrimmjob
There are plenty of games with a feminist perspective, are they all time best sellers? I don't know, but I doubt it. You'd have to assume that most of these girl gamers are really dying for this kind of thing. I think most gamers, men and women, don't really give a shit, and play games because they think they are fun, not because they have big titty waifu characters or a strong independent woman protagonist. I would also guess that the demographic of guys who are into big titty fuck toy games outnumber girls who want to play games with a feminist perspective.

Raggamuffin
well no, you don't give a shit, that doesn't mean that no one does. And they don't need to woke themselves to death over this stuff. Most female characters in these games could be toned down maybe 12-15% and be fine.

Anaxagoras
Exactly. Some people care a *lot* about how they're represented. It seems kinda strange to me, but then again, it's always been my demographic that has been catered to; I don't really know what it's like to be a marginalized group.

But more importantly, even for people that don't consciously, directly care about their in-game representation, it's helpful when throwaway secondary or tertiary characters aren't gross stereotypes.

Hell, speaking for myself, I get kinda squirmy when boob jiggle happens in a fighting game. It's just.... stupid. And puerile. Look, I'm already playing a game where I'm high-kicking a muscle-bound wrestling oaf into the ground. There's no need to add boob jiggle to my character; the whole premise is already silly enough.

Anagramother
I think she doesn't really deliver things in a way where I feel mindblown, but her criticisms are valid. Manchildren here 1 starring out of disagreement so I'll 5 star to balance out.

I love games and they can have their tires kicked here and there without being ruined.
15th
I'm hard pressed to think of anything more trivial than a single person's opinions about video games. People flip shit about this though, eh?
Doc Victor
I don't get the hate. She's got an opinion and is clearly generating some revenue for the industry.

Also, ugly? I would love to blast that uppity little clam.
Ninehells
I love boobs.

That said, yes, she makes many valid points. You only have to look at the extreme sillyness of "fanservice" to see absurd spectacle for the male gaze.

But it isn't just video games, and it has been going on since the beginning of visual art.

But as much as I love boobs, I love impotent rage even more.

5 stars for the frothing-mouth butthurt this video will have inspired.
John Holmes Motherfucker
I saw Anita on DEMOCRACY NOW, and when Amy Goodman started into the expected anti-games rhetoric, Anita cut her off, and talked about how much she enjoyed the very games Amy was criticizing.

Here's Anita's disclaimer, which she uses over and over again:

"This series will include critical analysis of many beloved games and characters, but remember that it is both possible (and even necessary) to simultaneously enjoy media while also being critical of its more problematic or pernicious aspects."

Anita says that it's okay to enjoy to enjoy games with sexist tropes. This is like Lacy Green's video on objectification, where she very clearly says that objection is okay sometimes. And this kind of nuance is lost on the the internet, which rages for months about an argument that nobody made. because it's such its such sweet sweet clickbait.
Gmork
Confusing "sexist" with "sexy".

So is Arabian Moon from Superior Soldiers (known as Perfect Soldiers in Japan) an exotified fantasy sex object or a subversively free-spirited woman of color? I need to know in time for the next arcade tournament.

If anything defines the millennial generation, it's their uncanny ability to ignore the extraneous and get right to the heart of the matter. Video game titties.

John Holmes Motherfucker
This is a classic bullshit argument. There are more important things than video games titties to complain about. Like people who complain about video game titties?

Fezren
I lol'd @ only 60k views.

Fuck your identity politics. Nobody who matters gives a shit about Anita Sarkeesian or her bullshit views. I don't think anyone ever gave a shit about it to begin with.

The real issue was always online harassment which is demonstrably something that happens on either side of the fence of whichever issue is popular on whichever day.
TheGrungle
great takedown of 10000 year old video games made by japanese people who will never watch this
endlesschris
Bad critic capable of nothing more than the most surface-level "sexualization is bad, here are terrible examples which ignore anything of scholarly interest and focus entirely on B-movie grade material" critique.

So glad this sort of nonsense is on the outs with the public.
endlesschris
Hyrule Heroes, really? The garbage Dynasty Warriors spinoff on the console fewer than 1% of gamers own? Elena from Street Fighter, where EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER IS A RACIAL CARICATURE?

Christ.
