John Holmes Motherfucker - 2018-02-15

I was obsessed with this movie when I was in High School, but now it really looks like shit. Definitely a credible candidate for a future MNR

cognitivedissonance - 2018-02-15

We could do a whole Ken Russell film festival. He is like Kubrick, if Kubrick was really good at making crazy, tasteless schlockfests.

Old_Zircon - 2018-02-15

Oh, it's terrible but I still love it. Unlike Tommy, which I never liked.

Old_Zircon - 2018-02-15

I think Gothic would be my top pick for streaming, though.

betamaxed - 2018-02-15

I'm down if anyone wants to watch The Devils because that movie is totally bad ass and is my all time favorite Ken Russell joint.

Zircon, let me know if you need a copy of Gothic as the betaflix library can always provide.

WRT Tommy: I just don't understand it from a "okay.... why?" point of view.

Old_Zircon - 2018-02-15

LAst time I saw The Devils was in 2003 when I went to visit the drummer from my old band who was working at the Village branch of Kim's Video. Coming from more conventional video stores myself, it was great to be able to put something like that up on the in-store monitors.

At my high school it was well known that back in the 80s accidentally screened it for a European history class because the book (The Devils OF Loudon by Aldous Huxley, which is really good if totally forgotten now, and almost completely unrelated to the movie other than being about the same historic incident - it's basically the same as if they had shown Pasolini's Decameron because it's based on a historic text) was part of their standard curriculum for a long time. Which is pretty hilarious (both that they showed the movie and that the book was part of the curriculum).

I still think Gothic hits a special balance between his 70s psychedelic trash and his 80s horror trash, although it's not my favorite (my favorites are Lair of the White Worm and Liszt-O-Mania).

Old_Zircon - 2018-02-15

The problem with Tommy is that The Who had too much influence. The thing that makes Liszt-O-Mania work so well for me is that i has all of the shoddy excess of Tommy but with Ken Russel's own weird ideas instead of Townshend's far less interesting ideas. Also the music is hilariously bad. Also there's no movie that can't be redeemed by Little Nell without a shirt on.

Salome's Last Dance please and thank you!

garcet71283 - 2018-02-15

I watched Gothic on Netflix during a particularly boring Saturday afternoon a few years ago.

It sure was something.

Also, Wonder Woman tag?

Old_Zircon - 2018-02-15

I'm changing my nomination to Mahler on strength of the clip that should be showing up on the front page any second now.

Old_Zircon - 2018-02-15

I actually don't remember Salome's Last Dance that well, I haven't seen it since 10th grade. I remember liking it, though, but really there aren't many Ken Russell movies I don't like a lot, then or now

memedumpster - 2018-02-15

I haven't seen Gothic since before I knew who Ken Russell was. It definitely stuck with me, though I can't really tell you why.

cognitivedissonance - 2018-02-15

So that seals the deal: Ken Russell Film Festival on N off-night?

Old_Zircon - 2018-02-15

I posted a lineup proposal in the "upcoming movies" thread earlier today.

garcet71283 - 2018-02-15
