John Holmes Motherfucker - 2021-06-25
Wow! That is all kinds of inappropriate! This is season 1, episode 2, not counting the unaired pilot with Jeffrey Hunter as Christopher Pike that was later recut into a two parter.
What's actually racist about the early episodes is the way Uhura is played against Spock. She's black, you see, and that makes her the opposite of a Vulcan. She's portrayed as hyperemotional In the first episode, she criticizes Spock to hiss face for his lack of emotion at learning that a memeber of the landing party has died. "That could be Jim Kirk, the closest thing you have to a friend." Even in the 22nd century, that can't be how you address a superior officer.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2021-06-26 This is Season 1. Episode 2, Its 1966, which is not only 29 years before Tuvok, but also before the characters of Spock and Uhura were settled. 56 years, 2 seasons, and six movies later, it seems weird to see Uhura carry on like this, and it's weird to see Spock sort of smile like that. To their credit, the writers and show runners soon arrived at a more workable dynamic, and a much more interesting and appropriate foil for Spock in Leonard McCoy.
Readers of English will note that I said that in the very early episodes, Uhura was portrayed as hyperemotional, and therefore she was the opposite of Spock, and she was placed in opposition to Spock by the scripts. I think that her hyperemotional nature is based on a racist trope.
My ambien is kicking in, so I'm just gonna press the submit button.

Nominal - 2021-06-26 Uhura was the opposite of emotionless Spock because she was a WOMAN.

mattresspolice - 2021-06-26 There were times when belligerence towards Spock was a comment on racism. Playful moments like this are NOT among them. It's just that no one seemed to consider it to be racist or inappropriate to reduce an alien colleague to a physical feature they can't change. (Within a highly organized, supposedly enlightened fleet, no less)
I can forgive the original series for not seeing this, but even in the 2009 Abrams movie they have Kirk and McCoy using the slur "old pointy ears" or whatever.

John Holmes Motherfucker - 2021-06-27 Look, I'm not trying to cancel Star Trek, okay? But this was a very early moment of tone deafness. We all have them. They definitely found their groove later on.

mattresspolice - 2021-06-27 I agree. My comment was more in response to lef. :)

Lef - 2021-06-29 This line is still bullshit: She's black, you see, and that makes her the opposite of a Vulcan.

Hey, remember in 1989, when the movie writers decided that Uhura's best espionage tactic was to perform a naked fan dance? Haha. Star Trek.
