My roommate who drank soda for lunch had a fucking stroke about 2 months ago

Also I'm thinking about buying a Oculus rift 2, any of y'all have any input on that

It's an expensive toy. I keep thinking I should buy a VR headset with my disposable income but then I think I could use that money to buy a Fender Jazz Bass and then I think I am not really good enough to justify that and my Yamaha isn't holding me back. Then I realise I don't really have enough spare time to play VR games when I don't even have enough spare time to play the scads of non-VR games I already own. Then I go clean litter boxes and make sure my animals all have clean water, take out the garbage and go get groceries. By then I've forgotten all about VR headsets until the next time I see an advertisement for VR headsets.

that new Vintera series from Fender is niiiiiice tho

Theres loads of headsets
You should be able to find one there to suit your purpose.

Dont get a quest 2 tho. Facebook demanding you connect to their shitty social network in order to use a totally unrelated pc peripheral is insanity.

Plenty of peoples quests have been bricked by fb cus of some errors with their account.

https://www.vrfinal.com/facebook-account-issues-effectively-br ick-certain-oculus-quest-2s/

Also its not your hardware that you are buying. It's facebook's (who are fucking terrible) and they can do whatever they want with it in the future. Eg. add ads!

https://www.theverge.com/2021/6/16/22535511/facebook-ads-oculu s-quest-vr-apps

Also, you can buy a non fb connected oculus quest 2 (the business version). but it costs €350 more + like €200 per year. That is probably the minimum amount money fb expects to make each year per user from selling all the personal data the quest is constantly collecting from all its sensors.

HP Reverb G2 looks nice.
Also if you want something that doesnt require a pc there the HTC Vive Focus or HTC Vive Focus Plus
They're a bit more expensive but cheaper than the non-fb connected version of quest + at least they will still work in several months time, and not have fucking ads or god knows what added.

I bought one, it's very cheap for what it does. It's a fun novelty to pick up every once in a while. You can take it to parties or whatever. Don't expect more than that. Don't expect to live inside it, VR is too uncomfortable.

I've had a few different headsets, I do dev work with them.

Quest 2 is the Switch of vr headsets. Not as clear, comfortable or feature packed as other options, but its wireless. That's a huge deal. Like moving from landlines to a mobile phone - you won't go back. Good VR creates immersion that is unique to VR and impossible to describe. When you're tethered to a computer, the immersion is reduced.

You can achieve this with other more expensive headsets with extra hardware, along with the gaming PC needed to run those games. You can also tether the Quest 2 to your gaming PC wirelessly, or with a single usb 3 cable if you want to play PC VR games like Alyx with cranked graphics. But the option to play lower fidelity games without another computer is freeing - you can't get that with other headsets.

BUT, you have to have a Facebook account. They can (and probably do) track all sorts of metrics about your body motion or surroundings. So far, Oculus has allowed home brew development (and actually made it easier to do recently.) But you are subsidizing the cost of the hardware by giving them access to your data, same as using any google services for free. This is a broad and general problem with our hardware overlords.

There's enough good quality VR content now that you'll resonate with something. Most experiences are on the short side - Alyx is one of the longest experiences at 6 - 8 hours. Most are much shorter, perfect for an hour or two each week. Try social apps as well - VR is incredible for conversing with other people, even with cartoonish avatars.

the HTC Vive Focus or HTC Vive Focus plus are wireless too
theyre the same thing
basically a smartphone strapped to ure face. They dont need to be hooked to a computer.

Whoever is Gordon ruins this by being a big fat loudmouth who talks too much. Everyone playing the NPCs are great.

"See what happens when you bring your passport?"

"I'll stop your fuckin mouth..."
