The separatists happened because the installed ultranationalist government and neo-Nazi protesters decided that the best way to assuage the concerns of pro-Russian Ukrainian counter protesters in the east was to fucking murder them.

You supplied them with equipment, training, intelligence support and allowed Nazi mercs to travel there to help with the murder. The west had all the power and leverage to stop this conflict in its infancy but the most important goal was to damage Russia. Not peace, not civilian lives.
