I enjoy hating on things that are popularly enjoyed because I am edgy.

She, like many people her age, don't understand what it's like to grow up in a world where you can see no good future.

Of course young people want to escape to the past.

Happy Days was thing.

Binro the Heretic - 2024-03-13

"Happy Days" was a thing because "American Graffiti" was a thing.

And "American Graffiti" was only a thing because there was a brief window of prosperity after WWII.

Do you really see the kids of the 2010s making a nostalgic Americana sitcom based on their childhoods?

Grow the fuck up and have a Dr Who wedding like a god damn adult!

The first Harry Potter book was a blatant ripoff of School of Wizardry, published a mere 7 years earlier. SoW didn't have stupid Quidditch, and a disadvantaged protagonist who rose to the same level as his peers through hard work rather than a super special boy legacy admission.

Was a tad disturbing to see college age kids reading it back when it was new. It always came off as a pre-middle school alternative to more mature, better written stuff like The Chronicles of Prydain.

Anyone over the age of 10 shouting "Leviosa!" should be ashamed.

It's a totally different story but I like Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea better for the "boy goes to wizard school" trope.

I see Harry Potter the same as isekai…a power fantasy for slightly nerdy white people who know in their hearts that they are special and unique despite being utterly bland and uninteresting

If you want a really good wizarding school series, check out "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss.

It's one of the few I've read where the protagonist has to worry about tuition and things like food & housing.

exy - 2024-03-15

Luckily Rothfuss' protagonist is such a wonder-dicked Mary Sue that those concerns don't amount to much.

What are you talking about? Kvothe fucks up all the time, especially when dealing with other people on a personal level.

He's gifted magically, sure, but he makes terrible decisions.

Also, to anyone who hasn't read it, there's a part where the protagonist has to fight a dragon that's tripping balls on magic heroin before it destroys an entire town.

One of the special joys of the modern era is when a celebrity whose work you find annoying gets canceled for unrelated reasons of them being shit. Like what if the Coldplay guy turned out to be real racist? That'd rock, right?

In that respect, JK Rowling just keeps delivering the goods.

Crackersmack - 2024-03-14

she is right and I like her. listen to the old lady.

Chronicles of Prydain! I got into that series after playing The Black Cauldron on my Apple IIc, which means I have to suck it up and indirectly thank Roberta Williams for getting me into reading.
