not that i know the first thing about robots or engineering, but shouldn't the leg go over the top or something instead? i mean what if there is a large rock on the ground

That would need energy. It's cheaper energy-wise just to tuck in the part that's about to hit something.

But then again it'd need sensors... Or you could just let it hit, because the leg has such a small mass, it'd just get dragged over the obstacle with negligible damage.
