Yes and No, depends on where you are. There are no federal laws against pedo fiction or drawings or 3D computer images, but there may be local laws. It's a tough line, on one hand you don't want to encourage kidfuckers, but you also don't want to be thought police. You can't go around making arrests based on things in peoples heads or for things they MIGHT do; but then again, kidfuckers.

I'm in favour of there being "artistic renderings" of pedophilia - not because I enjoy it, but because, like drugs and prostitution, it will always exist, one way or another - so we should attempt to sate the diabolical desire with victim-less renderings.
The better we get these depictions - such as the case of Second Life's interaction, etc - the better, I think, we can satisfy the pedophiles drive. Thus, they will not be actively seeking the "next step," IRL [theoretically.]

Meanwhile, there should be stronger punishment for those who seek the "real thing," so to discourage RL exploitation and, in turn, encourage fancy to be kept within the realm of [dark] fantasy.

I agree 100% with you, snothouse... but it's easier said than done, as most pedos have to be caught in the act somehow, or turn themselves in. Even when caught and "rehabilitated," most have a very high recidivism rate (not counting chemical castration "therapy")

Generally, if you write a story about pedophilia, a pretend judge writes a story where you go to prison, and until that character's released you cannot write about anything other than prison - or escaping from prison - until a certain date. Going against these rules gets you thrown out of The Fanfic Guild, and you'll be unaffiliated and therefore unable to publish through normal channels unless you successfully appeal.

The same is pretty much true for drawn art, although it involves judicious use of MSPaint, Photoshop and felt tips.

On the other hand, real world creepiness, including hanging around kids and owning certain pornography, is fortunately illegal.
