In japan, about two weeks.

Also note similar systems already exists for cars and large-scale backup/retrieval systems. A local video library here in Montreal also use a similar system for on-demand on-site DVD/laser disk access. These system are all the same. Only the medium change.

Even something as mundane as bike parking can be enhanced through the use of a giant underground base.

It's like a giant tape robot... but for bikes!
It's... beautiful.
In Wolfsburg, Germany, there is a Volkswagen plant with two massive towers like this that are full of Volkswagens.
Not knowing Japanese, I'd say this is a report of the devastating bike shortage in Japan -- they only have this one bike good enough to fill the whole parking space.

The bikes outside... Not good enough.
My God, it's full of bikes...
The idea kind of falls apart if there's only a few of these stations in the city, but I approve anyway.
