Seriously, without the context of the shit kids were doing, and I remember what kinds of shit kids did in our American Government classes, how can we adjudge this? It's interesting that this is "disrespectful" to students but I wonder if they were being respectful first. Sometimes students get this idea that they are entitled to sweetness and light regardless of how individuals behave.
