It's more of a cultural symbol than patriotism here. You could burn a Union Jack and it not be a thing.

Big Beef Burritos Supreme For a bit more context, the England flag is associated with football, the Union Jack with nationalism and, when it occurs, the Stars and Stripes is more of a trapping of middle class family homes (although decreasingly less prevalent.)
Even in Germany the Union Jack is a symbol of nationalism; these things work by association - connotation - and not what they actually denote.

There is a squirrel whisperer on my campus. She does her thing around campus then the squirrels follow her around. She feeds them, never been bitten or attacked and, well, is outside with the squirrels.
