Needs a noble savage tag. I haven't seen the movie yet but I hear it's just another noble savage movie.
Cleaner82 - 2010-01-13
The interesting bit is it's also conservative propaganda, there's a little something to offend everybody. White guy deigns to descend to level of primitives, teaches them his wise ways, saves them with his whiteness, learns Valuable Lessons From Their Savagery. Etc etc. They call that the 'white messiah' myth. So either that or a condemnation of hoo-ha American militarism, or shame on you for cutting down trees. Pick your poison.

I suggest seeing it and trying to willfully ignore any sort of message. It's really gorgeous and a decent action movie, if not for... all the... stuff.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-01-13
I wouldn't even say conservative propaganda, it's just more our ethnocentrism is so entrenched that nobody saw a problem with either the noble savagery or the white messiah. It looks great, though. I saw little reason to judge what's essentially a furry Dances with Pocahontas on its storytelling or its message.

I am at a loss for words. They explain the political parallels, which are glaringly obvious to anyone over 8, and just admit that the war mongering in the USA is what this film says it is??? What's the argument?
Bort - 2010-01-13
They're thinking "don't mess with Texas". (Technically not Texas, but you get the idea.)

They encouraged him to recycle the 3d glasses so he took them home and threw them out.

What the fuck is wrong with this guy? Who goes out of their way to make more trash?
Cleaner82 - 2010-01-13
Even the other guy seems nonplussed by the petulance of that. I'm like the other guy, I took my first pair home.

spikestoyiu - 2010-01-13
I feel like pollution and recycling and pretty much involving protecting the environment from our disposable culture is one of those things that SHOULD be a no-brainer for everyone on the planet, but since it'll always be considered a "hippy" ideal, noodles like this guy here will always resent it. Because they are enormous children.

wtf japan - 2010-01-13
I know people who deliberately make more trash than they normally would because they hate environmentalists and don't believe in science.

spikestoyiu - 2010-01-13
Waste needing to go somewhere = science

Maybe they're colorblind. Not being able to distinguish between the blue bin and the orange bin can be very embarrassing for someone.

Option A:
Claim that, despite clear references to US policy, there are significant differences between Cameron's sneering strawmen and the far more nuanced realities of war and our history with native populations.

Option B:
Point out that the villains actions do really parallel ours, but get indignant that Cameron somehow think pollution and imperialism are bad.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-01-13
He might be right about the Blackwater thing, and of course he's not the first to say it, but I figured it was more of a jab at KBR since the company name was like CMR or something.

What does it say about conservatives that they consider a negative view of imperialism as a liberal thing? It's like what they said on the Daily Show about Franken's anti-rape bill: do you really want to be on the side that's against rape victims? I mean, at what point does rechecking your allegiances start to look palatable?
phalsebob - 2010-01-13
What is insane is that this movie portrays a mercenary leader as some kind of thug who thinks only of military solutions. What a crazy crazy idea.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2010-01-13
It's not propaganda, it's a re-hashed plot from several episodes of Star Trek (any series), The Outer Limits and the Twilight Zone. It's just tarted up a lot more than its previous incarnations.
pastorofmuppets - 2010-01-14
Good sci-fi always contains ham-fisted political allegory. It's like saying "throw your hands in the air" in a rap song. It's an invocation to the spirits of your silly genre-ancestors.

pastorofmuppets - 2010-01-14
Actually scratch the word "good"

Syd Midnight - 2010-01-15
It was a terrible pulp sci-fi novel. It was perfect for Hollywood.

Someone should tell these asshats that "A la" is French. I bet they would hate that.
