I'm impressed. He didn't even need a TV and a beer to totally ignore his girlfriend.

It's creepy seeing this just out of nowhere since it's the EXACT scene that made me basically stop playing Shenmue. (to be accurate, I stopped maybe an hour or so after this part of the game).
I had worked very hard to get past the awful dub and just enjoy things, but I was getting frustrated with the illogical fetch stuff and then this happened. Just....wow.
But really, this is the point where i also got convinced that i was playing the most ellaborated videogame train wreck the world had seen in years. I have high tolerance for bad dubs, bad stories and what not, but this was too much. This is not even soap opera material, an episode of Grey's Anatomy has better developed characters than this.
Wasn't this game in development for a couple of years and something of 2 million dollars invested in it?
I bought it when it first came out, it was amazing...for a few days at least. Waaay to much shit that loses its novelty fast. Shenmue passport CD was a fun but ultimately boring diversion, the online for it was crap and nowhere near as promised. whatever though it was novel for what it was, admirable in attempt and its place however odd or questionable in videogame history.
It will still hold a nice place in my memory, if only for those few couple of days were I was totally amazed by all the redundant shit you could do and whatnot, hyped as shit for the future of gaming:D
I liked how detailed the world of the game was, too bad they never give you anything fun to do.

I'm guessing this is a combination of overly-literal translation of the original dialogue , and the original dialogue being stupid in the first place.
It's the second, Ryo's reaction to pretty much everything in the game are the same. He makes Poochie look like prince Hamlet.

Like sands through the hourglass... so are the Days of Our Lives.
