This technology has been around for about seven years in software written by The Foundry.

All of the things this guy is doing here would take an experienced artist a minute to do without this tool

It's been around even longer than that if you look in various SIGGRAPH proceedings. "Image inpainting" was the hot image processing trend of 2002, and there's stuff that goes back even further.

Alien Skin also made some commercial plugins for this stuff which was way better than Photoshop's healing brush/patch tools.

Unfortunately, people tend not to notice the scary stuff until Adobe incorporates it directly into their products.
