I never realized that the ending theme from "The Raccoons" was about joining a gang, but it's so obvious now.

Argument:

"Hobo with a Shotgun" was trying way too hard to pander to that sort of middlebrow cult film crowd and achieve artificially constructed midnight madness status to be enjoyable*

CATCHPHRASE! CATCHPHRASE! ECCENTRIC CHARACTER! CATCHPHRASE!

Also, the crowd where I saw it was really gross, and kept yelling out misogynistic comments every time a woman was on screen or placed in danger, so that may be tainting my review

*Im not too sure that "middlebrow cult film crowd" makes sense! What I'm trying to say is that if I was into Roller Derby and/or "omg ninja pirate zombies" I'd probably like the movie more

Middlebrow cult film crowd makes sense. It's all those people who want to be like people with actual quirky taste in movies and end up watching these little cargo cult imitations of them.

Kevin Smith fans, is the preferred term I think.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2011-03-31

Regardless of how shitty the audience/fans are, the movie was great. After the winking-at-the-camera of Machete it was great to have an exploitation flick that played things completely straight.

I am in general leery of films that are so obviously contrived, that were put together by people deliberately aiming for cult status from the get go, whether it's some exercise in lifeless fanboyish homage, or pretentious, phony excursions into "weirdness" or just bad amateur movies trying to get a free pass as a cult flick.

That said, Hobo was refreshing for it's lack of the director and writers constantly nudging and winking at the audience, and managing to at least look and feel like a true exploitation film - the original trailer looked like it cost K or something to make, and the film looks like it cost maybe K.

"Also, the crowd where I saw it was really gross, and kept yelling out misogynistic comments every time a woman was on screen or placed in danger, so that may be tainting my review"

That pretty much summed up Repo: The Genetic Opera. A room full of people trying to astroturf cult status onto a movie by cramming the square peg movie through the Rocky Horror participation round hole. The fact that half the audience participation was screaming "Bitch!" or "Whore!" every time a female character showed up on screen. That and the fact the movie was just a stinking pile too boring to even be entertaining.

Your criticism seems like really intense projection!
