Try 1988. Loved (the US, gothy) Area at the time, and Lynn and Henry's early 90s band The Moon Seven Times. There were rather few US bands focused on atmospheric dreampop at the time.
Was weird seeing Area picked up by Chicago goth label Projekt for reissues post M7x. See also Lanterna for guitarist Henry Frayne soldiering on in instrumental rock & post-rock.
