I adore Paris, and they've made a concerted effort to clean the place up, but you can still get a stench of the old city sometimes. The Palais Garnier is one of the most gorgeous buildings I've ever seen but last time I was there smelled like a swimming pool of urine had been festering in the basement for weeks.
