Maybe it's just me, but if you have to wear a set of goggles, you're not using holograms. You're just mapping images on top of live video and displaying it to screens you wear on your face.

Corpus Delectable - 2015-01-21

It looks like you look through the lenses, and that the "hologram" is projected, once for each eye, onto the lenses.

I think that it's "holographic" in that it's going to look like what we expect a hologram to look like, not that it's going to be composed of images generated by what is essentially a complicated diffraction grating.

Which way do the polygons face?

Also nice seeing them leverage that Minecraft IP

Also where the fuck are John's legs? Is he a ghost?

Old_Zircon - 2015-01-21

But can you fuck it?

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-01-21

You can if you are Tad Williams or Neal Stephenson.

And probably Cory Doctorow.

EvilHomer - 2015-01-21

One day. Soon. God willing.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-01-21

Tad Williams is all about tech now? I haven't read his stuff since The Dragonbone Chair.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-01-21

Tad Williams wrote the Otherland series, which explores virtual reality realms, but it started off great and became incredibly shitty. The ending was a bunch of bullshit.

SolRo - 2015-01-22

I loved all of the Otherland series.

But then again I read through it when I was like 13

infinite zest - 2015-01-22

Wow. Williams and Stephenson look like they could be brothers. Never heard of Williams, or if I have I haven't read any of his stuff. As far as Stephenson goes I loved Snowcrash and Cryptonomicon, but I only made it 2/3 into the Baroque Cycle, and haven't read Anathem. Readme sounds like a return to old-school Stephenson; has anyone read it? I have a 10 dollar gift certificate to Powell's burning a hole in my pocket.

infinite zest - 2015-01-22

er.. "Reamde".. I'm assuming that's intentional :)

spikestoyiu - 2015-01-21

I dunno how respectable Wired is these days, but yo... this sounds pretty wild:

Baraboo's an interesting name for the project. My friends and I took mushrooms and wanted to go to the circus museum in Baraboo Wisconsin but it was closed so we just wandered around, and it was kinda like this.

New ways to walk in front of a bus.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-01-21

just make a new "Dumb Ways to Die" song...no really, Microsoft should steal that idea.

Gmork - 2015-01-21

Hopefully this won't be as huge of a disappointment as the first bioshock game not being able to live up to the ridiculous pre-render video.

If this isn't just pre-render, if it's anything like this at all, it's going to be fucking amazing.

Architeuthis Tux - 2015-01-21

Everything in that video was pre-rendered, and their demo was cooked.

Gmork - 2015-01-21

Definitely had that look - but AT SOME POINT in our lifetime a 3d engine might actually look that smooth and polished.

Gmork - 2015-01-22

There goes real life, being all real.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2015-01-22

Bioshock's primary disappointment had nothing to do with its pre-rendered trailers. It had to do with the hype claiming your choices in the game mattered.

"So many endings! One 'good,' one 'bad,' and one where it's the same as the 'bad' ending but the voiceover sounds disappointed rather than mad! And they're all based on how you treat little girls!"

Gmork - 2015-01-22

Bioshock was a wonderful game, don't get me wrong - but the video made me think the gameplay and movement itself was going to be immersive and physics-based, and not just an atmospheric shooter with RPG elements.

betamaxed - 2015-01-21

how hololens will fail:

no form of secondary input device will require users to use imprecise voice commands that will fail half the time (see: xbone) or require users to hold their hands out in their field of view and flail in 3d space like an idiot (see: kinect).

the transparent screen in the lens will produce low quality images and a terrible refresh flicker that will cause eye strain. Users will abandon the product after a few months of use if they get that far and revert back to static screens

no developer support for consumer applications and maybe one or two decent quality tech demo games (see: kinect) that will sell moderate to poor due to the fact that you have to buy a specialty peripheral to play them

lol fans on your headset to cool the "HPU" during heavy processing that will be irritating as hell and possibly cause hearing damage over prolonged use

the device itself will weigh too much and again cause physical strain and discomfort for the user

it will launch at the dumbest price point imaginable (see: surface rt)

Jet Bin Fever - 2015-01-21

This is worthless garbage. Good fucking luck Microsoft. You're a sinking ship.

infinite zest - 2015-01-22

Seems that way. It looks cool in the video but the demo made it look incredibly dumb. Basically a girl stumbles around and creates a quadcopter, which ostensibly works after it's 3D printed, even though they had a model that was already pre-printed that they showed off instead of hers. It flew for a second, but it was a pretty simple design that could've been made much faster on a regular desktop or even a tablet.

And what's the deal with announcing something that's way in beta? Even back in the 90s it was a bad idea (Project Naomi, Ultra 64) but the way things are moving now, Apple can just pull a Malibu Stacie and announce something new and we'll all have forgotten about this, because the iPad has a new hat!

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2015-01-22

Last night I had a dream I was basically using this and my entire town had become a choose your own adventure story. If you want to fight the billionaire magnate, go down the street. If you want to eat ice cream, turn right. If you want to just go for a walk, turn left.

Eventually I wound up fighting the billionaire who was trying to stop the town from getting an energy efficient train.
