He never really happened in this country. I first read about Lord Sutch in the seventies, but I never had the chance to actually hear him before there was Napster. Has he ever really gotten his due as a seminal figure? The way I remember it, he came before Iggy Pop, before Alice Cooper, even Arthur Brown.

Wikipedia has his 1 major album on the "Albums Considered Worst of All Time" list

John Holmes Motherfucker
I don't understand how his "1 major album" could also be the one voted the worst album of all time.

I've only heard 1 cut from "Heavy Friends", "Gutty Guitar", and it was the worst thing I'd heard from Sutch. The production was utter shit. I don't know who's responsible for that shitty recording, but some big names were on it, and reportedly, they didn't sound great either.

"The album featured an all-star line-up with contributions from Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page (who also produced the album) and John Bonham, guitarist Jeff Beck, session keyboardist Nicky Hopkins, session guitarist Deniel Edwards and Jimi Hendrix Experience bass-player Noel Redding. Rick Brown and Carlo Little were previously with The Savages."

"A negative review published in Rolling Stone called Sutch "absolutely terrible" and lamented that under the restrictions of the project, the collection of talented musicians on hand were made to sound "like a fouled parody of themselves"."

Anyway, I don't care if every album was shit. DID YOU SEE THE VIDEO?

My dad was really into him back in the 60s, but I don't think I've heard him mentioned outside of that context. And yes, he did predate Cooper et al, but you have to remember that Sutch himself owed a lot to Screamin' Jay Hawkins.

He's pretty highly regarded by musicians of his generation. Bunch of people go their start with him, which is how he came to record with Jeff Beck and most of Led Zeppelin and a bunch of other people and play arenas in the 70s. He's pretty legendary and I'm always surprised how few people know about him. I know more people who know who he is than people that know who Arthur Brown is.

John Holmes Motherfucker
Definitely, Homer has a point about Screaming Jay.

So I'm listening to some cuts from Lord Sutch and Heavy Friends that I found on Youtube, and I like them. This reminds me of the time the New York Dolls were voted worst new band of 1975.

I should probably mention, my dad is English, so it's entirely possible that Sutch never happened in the United States.

"Lord Sutch and his Heavy Friends" is Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, and a few other guys from that scene jamming with Sutch whenever he could catch them between takes in a studio because he was an old friend of theirs and needed the money. I used to own the record. Keep in mind that those songs were ad libbed by a bunch of guys drinking and reminiscing about the skiffle band they used to be in as teenagers.

AFAIK he never happened in the States, and is probably better remembered for founding the Monster Raving Looney Party. I was so sad to learn that "Lord" was a nickname and not a title.
