The plot of this movie is an almost lawsuit worthy ripoff of a B movie from the early 80s but I forget the title of it.
Binro the Heretic
Nah, not really.
It was initially supposed to be Del Toro's deconstruction of popular tropes used in numerous 1980s/1990s horror/sci-fi flicks. He wanted to introduce them only to subvert them.
Then, the studio started getting worried and after a long fight with Del Toro, we the audience got two-thirds of a stylish horror movie grafted onto a typically 1980s/1990s third act complete with a cliché witty one-liner by the hero before he defeats the monster.
Still, a mostly great movie.
No, there's a specific movie that has exactly the same premise. It's not a noteworthy movie in any way, and I don't know if the narrative unfolds in the same way but the premise is identical. It'll come to me.

Anyone see Mama? I loved the ending to that just because they killed the kid.
Binro the Heretic
It's getting rarer for horror movies to NOT kill the kid. "Mama" was still excellent, though.

for my continued cultural influence to this website
you were right to trust me, its saddening that the pumpkin mask child death from halloween 3 has already been submitted here, sorely lacking the CHILD DEATH tag, which the blob kill list is also missing, because no one else here understands subtext anymore and will be likely saying
FUNNY, I DONT THINK 'CHILD DEATH' BELONGS HERE JUST ME BEARD BEARD BEARD MIDDLE AGE BEARD TAKIN RETARDS TO THE ZOO BEAAARRRRRRDDDD TAKIN RETARDS TO THE ZOO B EEEE AAAAA RRRRDDD takingretardstothezooooooo

This was not that shocking, even at the time.
