He's also white

infinite zest - 2017-07-12

I remember a time when the Mercury was a paper that concentrated mainly on the local music scene, before they started publishing liberal rage junkie pieces on how the people who get food carts shut down (because the owners are the wrong ethnicity) are heroes.

Then there's the one they did about a guy who committed some tragic racially motivated murders where they interviewed some cops who said "yeah, we know that guy. He's literally brain damaged" and the Mercury said "yeah right coppers" and published a dozen pictures of the guy and pretended like he was just evil.

TheyUsedDarkForces - 2017-07-13

Yeah, MN, as you say, The Mercury used to have all the upcoming local shows and articles on local culture stuff. It always had an obvious political stance but it was generally expressed through little jokes and stuff like that, which I kind of appreciated. It was kind of our plucky, fun, local paper for younger, hipper people that you didn't necessarily read for "news." It seems like somewhere along the line, they decided to shift to a more alarmist, social-consciousness/outrage kinda thing. I'm not really condemning it as a concept--plenty of things to be outraged about--or because they seemingly decided to take it that direction, I just don't appreciate some of the articles that come off as witch hunts or bullying. I kind of think of them as a dumber, poorer Vice now, which I'm sure everyone remembers as essentially a fashion/lifestyle thing in the beginning.

For the taco truck incident (Burritogate), the Willamette Week printed the original article that talked about how the ladies who ran the truck got their tortilla recipes from Mexico, which started a big to-do in the comment section. After that, The Mercury and a few other places, latched onto that and blew the whole thing up as an issue everyone should be angry about. It didn't SEEM like the point of the WW article was to call out the burrito truck for cultural appropriation, but that's what ended up happening, obviously.

Beware the comment section, there be monsters!
http://www.wweek.com/uncategorized/2017/05/16/kooks-serves-pop -up-breakfast-burritos-with-handmade-tortillas-out-of-a-food-cart- on-cesar-chavez/

It's really too bad, the food looks good. I'm sure they exist here, but I don't know of another truck that makes fresh tortillas...

We had a paper like that when I lived in Boston. Sometime around 2007-8 they went completely around the bend and did a three part expose about the causal link between HIV and AIDS being racially motivated junk science, AIDS drugs being the CAUSE of the African AIDS crisis, and the original early 80s AIDS crisis in American gay communities actually being symptoms of drug abuse and a hedonistic lifestyle, and having nothing to do with the harmless HIV virus.

The paper had been started by two guys, one of whom was the original founder, had a journalism background and handled the editorial side of the business, and the other of whom had a business background and was brought in early on as a partner to handle the business side of the business. They had a falling out, the business guy had forced the other partner to divest, and within a year they were doing stuff like that HIV/AIDS article because I guess he thought science was a tool of THE MAN or something. I think they eventually shut down about a decade later, long after turning in to a third rate amalgam of of the "fashion dos and don'ts" section of Vice ca. 2002 and your average biweekly "things to downtown if you're a yuppie" magazine that every city has at least one of.

infinite zest - 2017-07-13

heh I just linked to the merc's arbitrarily, as I usually do on here, pretty much because it's not The Oregonian. I haven't actually picked a Willy Week or Merc up since my Guinea Pig died back in 2010 though, since I have no need for free bedding for his cage anymore, at least not until I once again have small exotic animals to care for. The Mercury fired a friend of mine who worked in their "adult" section and there was some fucked up shit that I better not get into that he says happened, which I'd tend to believe, but my work keeps me in contact with the arts department and they're pretty cool I guess, but my linkage ain't no endorsement. Hell if I had the internet back in middle school I would've been posting links to the Rocket all the time, the Rocket's decline being the reason the merc kinda happened in the first place.

For a little context though I live in Montavilla like almost right behind that green structure in the first picture, and while I didn't actively participate in the counter-march I was there and witnessed what everyone else witnessed. Some 4chan looking motherfucker wrapped in an American flag, the reason you turn off your microphone when playing TF2, shit like that, nothing serious. And then it's serious. Free speech, while widely still considered a positive thing, is weaponized. And this guy goes and does this 3 fucking days after. Like, sorry you got pissed off and pulled a Kramer or whatever, people lose their shit. But don't expect to not get treated like a potential murderer if ya do.

infinite zest - 2017-07-13

I also forget how many of y'alls live in Portland. Before it all becomes one big condo and I move to Melbourne we should drink cheap beer and play the pinballs at the slingshot or something

TheyUsedDarkForces - 2017-07-14

Sure! Come to POE movie night IRC chat, IZ, we'll make plans to grab a beer

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-07-14

He's shown up before I'm pretty sure.

Meerkat - 2017-07-12

"I guess I'm just a patriot", *sob*, "like New Gingrich, he just loved America so much he couldn't stop cheating on his wives!"

spikestoyiu - 2017-07-12

Macklemore has fallen on hard times.

yogarfield - 2021-07-13

You might never read this, but here's one of the funniest and obscurely relevant replies I can give:

Few years back I was walking back from lunch on the Hill and I passed Macklemore on the sidewalk on Broadway.

I don't give a fuck about him, or celebrities in general, but it was around the time when everyone here was doing his look, so I did a double-take. No doubt it was him.

He was carrying a sopping wet paper bag of what seemed like exploded lunch and a look on his face like he craved death. It was glorious.

Maggot Brain - 2017-07-12

"You can't fix stupid"- Ron White

SolRo - 2017-07-12

He got so self aware of his ignorant bigotry as soon as it had legal consequences! What a surprise!

Robin Kestrel - 2017-07-12

"I'd like my victims to be forced to talk to me like I'm not garbage. I'd also like a pony."

Oscar Wildcat - 2017-07-12

Your emotional volatility and lack of impulse control is duly noted.

Anaxagoras - 2017-07-12

"I don't go on social media looking to hate on people."

And yet, it happens. Weird. I wonder if he'll ever be able to square that circle.

StanleyPain - 2017-07-12

About as good as that racist piece of shit, Timothy Dluhos crying like a fucking baby when he was confronted by a journalist over his social media bullshit (and posting pictures of people in his ambulance which is illegal anyway).

bawbag - 2017-07-12

This sort of crocodile tear shit is a growth industry.

dairyqueenlatifah - 2017-07-12

I think the word "racist" deserves a public apology at this point for how much morons have completely misused and devalued it in the last few years.

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2017-07-12

The couple was black you stupid fuck.

StanleyPain - 2017-07-12

Says the racist.

jfcaron_ca - 2017-07-12

I'd be pedantically pleased if people started using it exclusively as an adjective again.

Old_Zircon - 2017-07-12

It might be more accurate to call this guy a bigot but there is not enough information here to say. Based solely on this clip we can safely say he is a bigot, but I have a strong suspicion that he is also a racist.

Xenocide - 2017-07-12

Guy waving confederate flag: It's too bad how the word "Racist" gets thrown around so much these days. It totally devalues it.

Guy with swastika tattooed on his face: There aren't even that many racists out there anyway. By calling them out you just give them attention, which is what they want.

Guy burning a cross on a black person's lawn: I mean, if you just go around calling people racist all the time, then racism loses all meaning. I guess everyone's a "racist" these days, according to some people.

Guy currently stabbing a man because he heard him say something in Spanish: Didn't Martin Luther King say we shouldn't see color? What happened to that, liberals?

Guy carrying an assault rifle into a Muslim neighborhood for unspecified reasons: This is why Trump won.

memedumpster - 2017-07-14

All cultural segregationists are racists.

I think the term needs to be added to this site's metadata. Start an ad-sharing campaign with Chimpout called "Stay Out Da Colored Food, Whitey!"

Then you can both discuss how Asians not being Asian enough in movies just pisses you all off, why even have Asians?

Then go for hot dogs and milkshakes.

Old_Zircon - 2017-07-12

What a fucking dickhole.

That said, after this show of remorse there could be some real scientific merit in tagging him and returning him in the wild to see how long it takes for him to relapse.

SolRo - 2017-07-14

You are very naïve if you think he's changed in any way.

He's either crying because he's afraid of jail or his lawyer told him to ham it up for sympathy points from the judge.

Like most bigot conservatives, he doesn't feel bad about what he did. He feels bad about being held responsible for it.

M-DEEM - 2017-07-12

Great work everybody. But you know I can't pop until Binro chimes in.

But in the meantime lets compare the poeTV comments on this racist asshole video to the poeTV comments on this equally racist asshole from less than a month ago.

http://www.poetv.com/video.php?vid=161281

Hmmm. Seems Fishy!

SolRo - 2017-07-12

Clearly that's a reverse-racist. Duh!

15th - 2017-07-13

I'm mean, this guy actually did something bigoted, which is worse than having dodo opinions. He's also being a big pussy about it, which is funnier.

Hailey2006 - 2017-07-13

Lesson: Don't yell explicit things at people who have darker skin and dress different than you!
He should volunteer at a Mosque/Muslim community center for a year!

Also what's up with his hair?

Monkey Napoleon - 2017-07-13

No, the lesson is don't yell those things AND THEN try to run them over (what he's actually been arrested for).

SolRo - 2017-07-14

You can yell whatever hateful shit at any person of any origin in America. But once you chasing people and yelling shit at them it is considered harassment. If you're doing that in a vehicle and in a way someone might consider bigoted, a prosecutor may add modifiers to the harassment charges.

Juice Eggs McKenna - 2017-07-13
