Well produced? He goes the lowest effort technique of "looping random clips of the property" while he talks. Doesn't even make an effort to match them up to the dialog.

I don’t think there is any significant pushback for legitimate criticism of the last Jedi, but there is significant whining about it having women and minorities in it.

There was that weird "we gotta be in this together" moment where Leia clocked Poe over the head and the women took the ship over. Because men are stupid and can't be expected to make the right decisions, or some theme like that. And Laura Dern, for whatever reason, had that purple Portland, Oregon hair.

That said, I remember getting bored pretty fast with these 20+ minute talking head videos about Kathleen Kennedy and her clandestine feminist conspiracy. I mean, never mind she's been attached to our childhood memories since 1982. Also never mind that there was no misandrist conspiracy, either. The trilogy was just horrendously mismanaged behind the scenes, to where the final product was like seven different writers played tug-of-war and keep-away with the script.

That whole thing with Poe and leadership is fairly well explained. He was being a reckless warrior and it got a bunch of people killed, then wanted to double down to the point of doing a mutiny when the leadership had other plans.

Star Wars is basically tissue thin. The politics, the ethics, the spiritual/mystic stuff, the tech, the world - so much of it is implied/suggested and just falls apart when you apply any real scrutiny. It can't really sustain meta-analysis/genre-analysis like Rian Johnson does, and when you do it only really makes all the other movies in the saga look extra stupid.
Compare: Andor which deals with the some of the same stuff more successfully because it really just uses Star Wars as a backdrop to tell a different, largely separate story.

Going down a checklist of "subverting expectations" in such a rote, lazy manner is worse than even the most middling of straight forward stories.


And somehow, Rise of Skywalker mananged to be even worse.

I haven't seen any of the New Star Wars, but if your reviews are focused more on the inclusion of minorities than the film's actual flaws, then you're just a racist.

So, basically, The Last Jedi (and disclaimer: I had to learn this from watching a Nerrel video) relied heavily on the whole Jedi theme being rooted in Buddhism, and the Force pulling its sentient representatives to the Light or Dark to balance itself out. Rey's reveal as the child of space rednecks was supposed to be about her being a blank slate who could decide and forge her own destiny. Unlike Luke, the son of Fallen Space Christ, she could decide who she wanted to be, free of any ties.

The audience didn't expect that, and they didn't want that. No one paused the movie to fourth wall spoon feed anyone an explanation on religious or philosophical themes. Everybody wanted another fun space adventure like the one they grew up with. Rey being star trash was seen as a travesty instead of a unique storytelling technique. It also gave the 20 minute vloggers more "she's a Mary Sue Kathleen Kennedy period blood on the production" ammunition.

So what do they do? They make Rise of Whatever, where Rey is now Palpy's granddaughter, and there are lasers and ships blowing up in your face for 2 and a half hours. They failed at conveying something meaningful, so they gave the audience trash. And the audience still hated it.

The last Jedi tried too many new ideas and challenged too many established Star Wars concepts for the fanbase

In reaction the studio shit itself and made a follow up movie that tap danced in front of a booing crowd, doing whatever slapstick act it thought the audience would like but just making things worse.

It's the same problem with Marvel or New Trek (also just terrible everything here) or any of the big sequel franchises. People want the same thing over and over, but also something different. It never works because it's internally contradictory.

Last year my new year's resolution was to not watch/read any sequels, prequels, remakes, etc. It was great.

The best Star Wars property right now is Andor. Fight me.
