Nominal - 2023-05-07 It's even more annoying than the valley girl "totally" of the 80s/90s.

This is not something I will say a lot, but the French had the right idea here.

It’s actually a lot more complicated than it looks and it ultimately has to do with property rights that have been a thing in England since the Middle Ages.
The TLDR version is that the British basically lease land from the royal family for a really, really cheap rate in exchange for all this hoopla and a fraction of that rent and a rather modest allowance (compared to what corporate CEOs make).
It’s actually really interesting stuff.

decoy - 2023-05-07 This disgusting display cost the British taxpayer $125 million.

Nominal - 2023-05-07 Sorry, are you defending the monarchy as a great investment?

ashtar. - 2023-05-07 Just take their land. Property rights are a social convention.

jfcaron_ca - 2023-05-08 My solution (for Canada at least) is to appoint a new queen by sortition whenever the old queen dies. I.e. pick completely randomly a person who happens to be inside Canada at the moment of death. Irrespective of age, gender, nationality, etc, you are now the new Queen of Canada and you cannot refuse. You are given a budget of 10M$ for everything you need to do as queen, and your life is expected to be semi-public. The only hard requirement is showing up for official ceremonies and such, otherwise do whatever you want.

garcet71283 - 2023-05-08 Not saying it’s right or wrong but property rights are a thing, especially in England. You can imminent domain it sure, but it’s an ugly precedent.

glasseye - 2023-05-08 Not as ugly as a guillotine.
