that whiny death soundeffect at 0:14 is like the Wilhelm scream of video games.. I swear I've heard it in like 5 different games

You'll also notice the Doom demon scream noise in this intro movie. All these guys were working off the same public domain sound effects cd in the early 90s.

Unmerciful Crushing Force
I've noticed many a Doom sound in this as well as other games and shows, mostly movies.

Namely, I remember an Imp growl in the short-lived "Invasion: America" s well as the door-opening sound in the remastered Gundam movies.

DrVital
They're not public domain. They're off the "General" series. I've worked with a lot of them myself.

You'll hear the "doom door" and the "alien scream" in movies and commercials all the time.

Aelric
until recently, i always thought the wilhelm scream was the same as the academy scream from starcraft. i still wish it were, cause that scream is priceless.

never played this one, but x-com apocalypse was fucking awesome.

Aelric
also, at -1:02. aliens just came to kill our vampires. and we greet them like this? for shame, humankind.

theFlu
the wilhelm scream is nothing at all like the scream from starcraft...

Aelric
right, but i thought it was, without having heard the real one to compare. that, and i heard the starcraft scream in various other media as well. so i thought one scream was the other scream because both are canned sound effects.

why am i filled with the sick urge to continue to explain my confusion.

FABIO2
also the "ka-WOOSH" sound from the last boss of Doom 2 launching those boxes at you.

Dr. Lobotomy
Leaping out of the dropship with guns blazing... Did anyone ever managed to pull that off in that game without it turning into a complete bloodbath for your squad?
Urist
This intro was a blatent lie.. It led you to beleive this was going to be you kicking alien ass Doom style, an hour later later you were quietly weeping after the aliens handed you yours.

Pillager
@ Urist, if you aimed for gas pumps & wiped out civilians before Chrysalids got to them, things went a lot smoother.

this game (and its sequel) made me antisocial and void of popularity throughout middle school. THANK YOU MICROPROSE!
KnowFuture
Hell, this game probably kept me out of college.

mr666
This game was pretty great. Too bad it hasn't aged that well, though.
Cap'n Profan!ty
screw you, it's aged beautifully. it just needs an update, that's all.

Pandatronic
It's aged awesomely. I can't stand most interfaces from PC games over a decade old, but X-COM is a blast.

Eroticus E
It's aged better than most games from the early 90s. The graphics could be updated, but the gameplay is still better than any of the clones produced since.

Cube
The digitized sound is a bit choppy, maybe an IRQ or DMA conflict... Just move the jumper on the Sound Blaster and change the set blaster -setting from your autoexec.bat and we'll have another try...
glasseye
One of the best games ever.
manfred
I never understood why the blond soldier is over two times as tall as the minigun guy.
Zarathustra00
My brother and I play UFO defense or TFTD each year when we visit our parents for Christmas. I have yet to find another game which blends so many elements together as well. Forget next-gen consoles and their eye candy games, give me a good remake of x-com and a fallout 3 that feels like the first ones and I'll probably never see sunlight again.
Rabid Vegan
Pretty much impossible to top. The replay value still holds.
Jeff Fries
People speak so highly of this game I didn't expect that the characters wore purple jumpsuits
Caminante Nocturno
Those jumpsuits really are quite purple.
