Jet Bin Fever - 2013-05-28

In the CRAZY off the WALL world of CoD, the rules of physics don't apply!

Nikon - 2013-05-28

That's wonderful.

Jimmy Labatt - 2013-05-28

Did you Einsteins ever stop to think that COD Ghosts MIGHT in fact be set on a distant planet orbiting TWO suns? Yeah me neither.

takewithfood - 2013-05-28

Well it ain't Tatooine.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-05-29

It could be just seconds before the shockwave from the nuke hits.

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-05-28

Funny how this press event probably did more harm than good. Oh sure, they say there's no such thing as bad publicity... but I for one have already decided that instead of purchasing these things I just need to upgrade my PC and get the fuck out of console land.

garcet71283 - 2013-05-28

Yeah, its actually pretty embarrassing now...the next gen consoles are just year old PCs.

Aelric - 2013-05-28

Folks without PCs don't realize that quite yet. Not that it matters, consoles are now netflix boxes anyway.

The only bummer is exclusives, but even those have been floating over to PC more often lately, usually with bonus content and better textures. Makes me not regret having this beastly thing on my desk.

Gmork - 2013-05-28

Yeah. Jumping ship. 360 is the last console i own unless the trends change later.

Aelric - 2013-05-28

My plan is to buy a PS3 finally when the price plummets so I can catch up on the Yukuza series, maybe Uncharted, Last of Us and Heavy Rain. I'm sure there are a few others in there too. But I've spent this entire generation on the PC and have mostly been satisfied.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-05-28

Consoles still fuck up PC games. Fallout New Vegas was supposed to have Freeside and the Strip be these large, open areas with three times the number of NPCs. Thanks to console memory limitations, they had to be segmented into small areas.

It's also why in games like Saints Row III and the GTA games you lose your car and other things when you enter/leave missions, since remembering that kind of stuff would take up too much space on a console.

WHO WANTS DESSERT - 2013-05-28

Unless you are literally a child there is no reason to have a personal investment in this console warrior/PC Master Race bullshit

RockBolt - 2013-05-28

I'll probably be following, between this crap and drooling over the Oculus Rift

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-05-28

"console warrior/PC Master Race bullshit"

If it's just a dick-waving contest, fine. However, they don't exist in a vacuum, especially when titles are coded to be ported across platforms. These often have results that degrade the experience or cause one system to have mechanics that make no sense on another due to differing hardware configuration.

Burnov - 2013-05-29

John Carmack said in an interview that was submitted to PoE no less, that he believes that all multiplatform games should be developed with a PC release in mind, and then essentially shit-ported to the consoles.

So there you have it, John Carmack thinks the industry is going ass backwards.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-05-29

One positive aspect I read about vis-a-vis consoles and PCs effect on one another: Consoles, by virtue of having non-upgradable hardware, can help stop runaway upgrade requirements for PCs. Consoles like Xbox and Playstation set a standard that's going to be "valid" for at least 3 or more years. Developers don't see the need to make games even more complicated to render as only a fraction of the market will be able to run it, so (hopefully) they devote some resources to other parts of their games.

They still fuck it up a lot, but at least you don't have to go get a new graphics card every 1-2 years to play current games.

Millard - 2013-05-28

The light beam thing made me LOL:

Gamers: Complain that the big studios only care about graphics, then complain about the graphics

Jet Bin Fever - 2013-05-28

I think the point is that if you're going to spend all your press time talking about how good your graphics are and can't get basic lighting down, you have some problems with your game.

Gmork - 2013-05-28

Yeah and roaches in half life scatter. Not sure how this is "talking shit" at all on CoD - moving fish is an AI thing, not a graphics thing. Why would it matter that mario 64 did it already? This video seems to think it's making some sort of point. Curious.

Gmork - 2013-05-28

also who the fuck cares about single player in call of duty? its fun and they spend a ton of money to make it epic and contrived, but it's not like people buy CoD for the AMAAAAAAAZING single player

Aelric - 2013-05-28

It's a bragging point not only in regards to the first real footage of the game, which is the biggest game series of all time, but it was also shown at the Xbox One reveal like it's an amazing feat of this new hardware. It's not the words, it's the context.

Gmork - 2013-05-28

You're right, this isn't something new, even if it's a nifty behavior. I'd be kind of disappointed if it WASN'T in there, had nobody said anything, so I guess by now reactive ambient life is now a Hygienic factor for games - meaning people only complain when it ISN'T there, so bragging about it is like bragging about brushing your teeth.

Well, I guess I look at it like this:

Two people thought it would be cool for fish to react to swimmers being near.

Two people were correct.

One person wrote a bad set of talking points for the PR showing.

Riskbreaker - 2013-05-28

"spend a ton of money to make it epic"

Epic? Sure thing brog...

And the point this video is making is pretty simple, for all the graphic progress video games have made, AI wise we are still stuck. Developers keep focusing in graphics, and haven't bother to put the same attention in other aspects of the gameplay.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2013-05-28

"One person wrote a bad set of talking points for the PR showing."

Gmork, while I'm happy to hear you've been doing more productive things with your life this week than following video game drama, you need to understand the context:

The Xbox One's sole selling point is that it can change channels and run Netflix. Its core competitive advantage lies in its vague ability to "tie the living room together" despite being unable to explain exactly how this is any different from a remote control. Meanwhile, the vast majority of its other "features" are hideously awkward/invasive/blatant attempts at monetizing the consumer with zero regard for their personal satisfaction.

The result was a an unprecedented PR catastrophe so full of muddled, contradictory messages that Microsoft's response resembled a Hieronymus Bosch painting more than a well-oiled corporate machine. The real story here isn't "haha look at the fish," but rather how every single part of the Xbox One unveiling manages to flop in tandem.

sosage - 2013-05-28

This is hands down the largest, most botched Console PR announcement I have ever seen...and I use to work as a press monkey covering this crazy crap. Without LJ'ing the fuck out of this, every big feature discussed was either anti-video games or anti-consumer. Most of them were so fucked up that they were anti-Microsoft in disguise.

Sony presented a PS4 announcement that just made me feel bored of video games. Microsoft presented an announcement that made me feel that the PS4 was the best choice for the coming generation. That's how fucked this new generation is looking from those who still fuck with these things. Boredom > what MS announced.

Gmork - 2013-05-29

Shit it's not like i'm buying one of those things. Or defend it in any way. I was only specifically talking about the modern warfare/mario 64 fish thing.

Redford - 2013-05-28

I'm looking forward to Wildstar, personally.

chumbucket - 2013-05-29

More casual use of the term "A.I.". Like it means anything anymore.

Sexy Duck Cop - 2013-05-29

This pride in ancient technology reminds me of that decade-long stretch when games journalists couldn't think of anything nice to say in a preview of a game so they'd just generically praise its AI's flanking ability. It can flank you! Using teamwork and whatnot!!

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2013-05-29

"A.I." is just shorthand for "how the game responds to the player."

No, it's not actually what it purports to be, which is Artificial Intelligence. It's just a popularized term that has a lesser meaning when it comes to vidya games. If you've got a better term, get it out there and claim your place in slang history.

chumbucket - 2013-05-29

to me all it looks like is "dynamic response" or "reactive response" coded cues based on player inputs, not real intelligence.

chumbucket - 2013-05-29

But agreed, they want to sell games...so AI sounds "next gen-ish".

memedumpster - 2013-05-29

"AI" sounds flattering, like the game has to be intelligent to outsmart the player. I am often outsmarted by reused textures on corridor walls, the TI in some games is malicious.
