From what I remember he's being controlled by a sort of "It in a Sombrero" type of Southwestern located energy vampire who can also control the local wildlife, and that is eventually revealed in its true form in true King frump fashion as a giant golden eagle or something

"Desperation" also has a companion book called "The Regulators" which they're talking about turning into a miniseries. Each novel is set in parallel universes. The link between them is the evil entity trying to break out of an interdimensional prison by taking over the minds of people.

The joke is that "Desperation" is written by Stephen King, but "The Regulators" is written by his pseudonym Richard Bachman.
