When I was younger a friend and I went to Amsterdam, we ran into guys hyping scams like this all over the place. They were so obviously full of shit that I imagine you'd have to be pretty fucked up to fall for it.

Scamming smart people is hard and risky.

Using somewhat ridiculous promises helps self select gullible idiots.

Scrimmjob - 2021-01-06

I mean, we did totally get scammed on a few things in Europe, mostly bogus ass overpriced cab fare and shit like that.

I would probably get killed in japan because I could not possibly take such stupid criminals seriously. The way they talk is like every conman I've ever heard. Totally see-through and kind of pathetic.

I love how HE WALKS WITH THE GUY TO THE POLICE STATION SO THE GUY CAN SAY "NUH UH! NO I DIDNT!"

hahaha what is even happening. what does 'dangerous' actually mean in japan? how much danger is there, really?

people are people. im sure fucked up crime exists, but is the reality of the yakuza even 1/10th of the mysticism and legend?

I watched an entire documentary about japanese biker gangs and was like... where's all the meth and murder?

SolRo - 2021-01-06

I’m still not sure if the yakuza are really good at making sure not to kill anyone society actually cares about or really good at hyping themselves up to be scarier than they really are.

Probably a mix of both, as the Japanese police seem to be fairly susceptible to corruption and very likely to not thoroughly investigate crimes committed against the ‘lesser’ members of society.

i dunno, i'd say dangerous in japan is more like "get crazy in debt to a loanshark" or "the yakuza gained enough of a controlling interest in the company i run to fuck things up unless i play ball" instead of somebody mugging you or random violence or what have you. which exists, but by american standards, is pretty rare

the yakuza are real, and while they've been neutered a bit in the past couple decades by recent legislation, there are factions and sub-families that are particularly known for violence and being the "front line troops" for the larger confederations/family. it's usually directed at other yakuza or organized crime groups, generally, and by american standards, it's a little tame. most yakuza generally try to keep the violence to a minimum, as it's expensive, and the way the law is written now absolutely everybody gets hung out to dry if something like that happens. it's not the 80s anymore

as far as the legend goes i'd say yeah of course it's overhyped, it's generally in their interest to be feared

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goto-gumi

this is one of those "front line" families - they're the "vanguard" for the osaka-based yamaguchi-gumi into the inagawa-kai turf of tokyo
