Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2022-04-04

I grew up on TNG. That's what my family watched every day at dinner. I always thought it was dumb as shit (eg. all the aliens look like humans, humans have fucking *god* like technology which they barely exploit and seems to have not changed humanity at all from contemporary times etc. etc.)

Looking back tho I remember it fondly. It was good TV + less dumb than most TV.

I never saw much of DS9, cus when that was coming on I moved out of home to goto college. I watched it recently tho. My thoughts are that they were flush with money from TNG and hired *the best* tv writers. So, though its well written, it doesnt feel like star trek or even sci-fi, its more of a drama, about the characters rather than the adventure / mystery / sc-fi schlock of the week of TNG and TAS.

Jaws was never my scene and I don't like star wars.

I could never get into DS9. The actual story and writing might have been good, but I could never stand the majority of the characters and I could never exactly say why.

I guess they all seemed like people I would want to avoid in real life and have nothing to do with outside of work. Everyone seemed either mildly autistic, retarded, sociopathic, or jesus-y. Nog, Jake, O'Brian and Keiko, the doctor, Sisco's baseball obsession.

It was like watching a Trek where everyone was a semi-Barclay.

The word you're reaching for is melodrama. In TNG the drama felt meaningful somehow, but in DS9 you could just assume everything would be fixed no matter how stupid character X was being about it.

I think it was just it that previous Trek always felt like tests of the best of humanity. I never got a shred of that from the DS9 cast.

The same story was a better fit for Babylon 5. Despite DS9 having better acting, I preferred the Babylon 5 characters. The station felt more like a functioning, bustling station (DS9 felt like a rec center attached to steam tunnels).

The space battle special effects definitely aged better in DS9. The people who redid TSO's special effects should have remasters Babylon 5's instead.

I think in DS9 the characters/species that started off as caricatures (Ferengi, Vorta, Jem Hadar) ended up getting more interesting and nuanced by the end. The characters that started off more nuanced (Gul Dukat, Sisko, Odo) turned more into caricatures by the end.

I agree with your opinions. I never really watched TV sci-fi for the special effects though. The Babylon 5 ones didn't age well but the show never really depended on them. I didn't like the Babylon 5 captain(s) and the alien romance chosen one plotline. I liked most of the other characters and obviously everyone loves the two alien ambassadors.

I was reading a couple episode summaries, and suddenly remembered why I never got into the show: it was the first and only Star Trek to take spirituality seriously and religion seriously and respect.

Prior to that, it was always implied that not only had humanity moved beyond that nonsense, but that moving beyond it was a big part of how we had reached future utopia.

Wow I managed that sentence. Treat it seriously and with respect.

MANGLED. Jesus, I think I'm having a stroke.

casualcollapse - 2022-04-05

is all this because of the drama over the 4k release that's going around these days?

The Mothership - 2022-04-05

It's been 20 years, I think we can have DS9 week. Frank, if you're out there, I've changed my mind.
