Ew. What a perversion of the original show. Has the bland leftovers of the original cast, plus replacements for the 3 interesting characters who bailed (Dr. Johnny Fever, Venus Flytrap, that chick who married Burt Reynolds).
The first season actually had like, with little exaggeration, 50 different characters in the main cast, which they cut down by Season 2 here.
The whole reason behind this show being made was greed and desperation. See, after the original WKRP was cancelled it went into syndication and did very well and made a lot of money for MTM Productions. For awhile it was pretty much the top-rated sitcom in syndication, even doing better than other MTM shows like Rhoda or Mary Tyler Moore or Bob Newhart.
Meanwhile, MTM had lost it's way, going from a major producer of "quality TV" to a second-rate company just struggling to stay alive. So the folks at the company hoped to get some more mileage out of their most valuable property, WKRP, by producing more episodes directly for syndication. They wouldn't just make money off of the New WKRP, but planned to add those episodes to the WKRP syndication package, which in turn would increase the value of the reruns, because more episodes = more money. Off course, that didn't happen and the New WKRP only lasted 2 seasons. A few years later what was left of MTM was sold off.

The first time I ever saw this, it was an attack on my brain.
"But, where's Johnny Fever? Hey! That black guy isn't Venus! I think I need to lie down..."
