I actually saw this in theaters as a kid the very last time it was re-released. I didn't really think it was terribly racist; if anything just a relic of a different time. At it's worst, it makes it seem like there was nothing wrong with slavery, but it is a kids movie just using the old folk tales as a backdrop, so I think it's unfortunate it's been buried for PC reasons.
All they need is some selective editing and this Disney classic can be released from the vault to be enjoyed by your family again and again etc.
I think it's because said slaves/sharecroppers are portrayed as being happy or satisfied with their circumstances. Also, Br'er Rabbit and friends are gross stereotypes.
That said, this movie kicks ass. Brilliant music, animation, and storytelling. If Dumbo can get by the censors, I don't see why this can't.

The thing they don't tell you is that Br'er Rabbit was a safe way to pass along directions on how to run away successfully. The real tragedy about the film is not the portrayal of the slaves, but that the double meaning is lost in translation.
It was scripted by a lefty jew who was very much aware of the hidden meanings in the text, and Disney expurgated his explanations and then later turned him in at the McCarthy trials. If there's any reason at all to hate this movie, that is the real one.
